Peaceful Protest

Given the gravity of the dog catching rampage in Klang - MDDB is calling for a peaceful gathering of animal lovers and sympathisers at Klang Municipal Council Dog Pound this Saturday between 12.00pm to 1.00pm. We have no other choice other than doing this to show the council that they should immediately stop what they are doing to prevent the unnecessary suffering of these animals as well the possible outbreak of distemper, parvo and corona outbreak in Klang. Please join us - you can bring banners and placards as well as canddles to remember the dogs whih had suffered and died at the pound. The dogs are kept at Pusat Kurungan Haiwan, Kawasan Perindustrian Bandar Sultan Sulaiman, Northport. Call us at 019-3576477, 012-3739007 or write to us to find out more.

Pound Puppies and Dog

Cindy, on the road to recovery after her wound had been cleaned out.
The little pup's urine with was thick with blood - probably urinary tract infection. Thank go our friend Mandy is fostering it.
The little puppy who is skin and bones. She has distemper and corona.

The pound puppy looking for food.

The little Gremlins huddled-up at the clinic after being tested.

Another frightened little pup that was infested with ticks.

Waiting at the vets after rescue - this puppy had probably been starving for days.

Waiting at the vets

At the vets

Positive for distemper and corona

At the vets - this pup tested negative but did not have any appetite today

Distemper and Corona

This pup tested negative but is coughing and has blood in her feces

We are desperate. We have placed six sick puppies with fosterers and need more people to take in the rest until they are well. they four that tested negative yesterday seem to have other problems - one has a prolapsed anus, another is coughing and a third seems to have lost its apetite.
We also have six puppies which are so traumatised that they have become little monsters of sorts. Its starting all over for us and we are going to be horribly strapped for cash as treating these pups can be very expensive.
We are thankful that a friend and fellow rescuer has taken in the mother dog and four pups for us temporarily. We also have Cindy with the facial wounds to care for in addition to the distemper, parvo and corona cases.
To make matters worse - we have our healthy puppies at the half way home that are pending adoption. We do not want to compromise on their well-being and need to get them adopted as soon as possible. Please help. Our apologies for the pics being all mixed-up - but the captions will explain. The puppies had rafia string tied around their necks to identify the infections - blue for parvo, green for distemper and yellow for corona.
You'll note that some of the puppies have nore than one coloured string and this means that they have multiple infections.

The Klang Municipal Council is at it again soon after the Pulau Ketam fiasco. This time around they have sent their dog catchers on a rampage to catch dogs several times a day including at night.
The dog catchers are paid an allowance of RM 10 for every dog caught in addition to their monthly salaries as MPK employees. As a result many many pet dogs have been detained and taken to the MPK pound in Bandar Sultan Sulaiman.
Now, in order for such massive dog catching operations to be carried out, the pound must have the proper infrastructure such as an isolation bay, quarantine area as well as separate holding areas for pets and strays.
When dogs are stressed, deadly infections such as distemper, parvo and corona sets in. These infections are deadly and very very contagious.
Picture this:
An pet owner comes to the pound to 'bail out' his dog which had been placed in the cage with many other dogs, some of them infected with these deadly viruses. Of course, the pet dog has a 90 percent chance of infection.

The owner takes the dog back and he has other dogs at home. All of them will also be infected and the infection will also quickly spread to pets owned by anyone who visits the home as well as other dogs in the vicinity. What results next is a pandemic of massive proportions.
Those managing and running the operations at the MPK haven't the faintest idea what these viruses are but yet go on cramming the pound with countless dogs daily. When queried they say they are acting because of numerous complaints by Klang residents.
But Klang residents also complain about potholes, overgrown bushes, clogged drains and restaurants located in houses, as well as many other things – but nothing has ever been done about these things.
I know – I am after all a Klang resident.
To make matters worse – there is no budget in their dog catching antics for food and so the dogs are being starved. Some appear to have died of starvation. Several NGOs including us have dispatched dog biscuits but how long can we do this?

Don't they know that they have to make provisions for food when embarking on such a big blood-thirsty enterprise?
Anyway, another NGO My Animal Care has rescued almost 36 dogs from the pound and sent them off to a sanctuary. They have also given us 21 puppies and 2 dogs. Eight of the 21 puppies tested positive for distemper, corona and parvo viruses. This has proven our fears that the clueless MPK folks are cross contaminating dogs indiscriminately.

There are now being cared for by us and our fosterers. We are desperately hoping that the rest are safe. The second batch of puppies brought in by MyAnimalCare were so traumatized that they were ferocious and behaved like gremlins.
They will need a lot of time before they feel safe being around people. They bit the vet as well as her assistant who were testing them for the viruses. Can't the Pakatan Rakyat do something? Are they so bloody weak that they have no control over the local councils? Or is that because they don't give a rat's posterior about these dogs which are deemed defiling?
Whatever it is Selangor is supposed to be a developed state – what's the point of being a developed state when the local councils are still so very neanderthal ? And ideal situation would be for the local council to have educational programmes in tandem with the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) to educate the people of Klang on pet care and the importance to neuter. They should also emabrk on the TrapNeuterAndRelease/Manage (TNR/TNM) programme to battle the stray problems. If it can work in Indonesia, India and nepal so well - it should work very very well in a developed state like Selangor.
Have a look at the pics.

Sent: Wed, November 18, 2009 4:14:18 AMSubject: Dog being chained in the rain in Kepong area..... Please help!!!

Hi,

As discussed, this is the dog being chained in the rain days/nights. I first discovered him/her when I was in this area for an appt at night , and he was chained in the dark in a pouring rain..... That was almost one week ago. I have not forgotten him; I went back again this afternoon, hoping not to see him/her there, but unfortunately, he is still there being chained in the rain!!! Please talk to the owner and educate them the proper way to treat a dog, this is very cruel. Please try to do something soon because it's been raining for days..... poor dog will be shivering and get sick easily in this cold and wet weather. I do not know the exact address there but it's near SRJK (Chinese) Kepong . It's an open space with bushes and trees next to a shop selling metal material etc. Here is the map for your reference. Hope you can rescue this dog from this sad situation. Thanks and God bless.

Never-Before-Seen Photos Show Ringling Abusing Baby Elephants

Never-before-seen photos sent to PETA by a Ringling whistleblower show circus trainers cruelly wrestling baby elephants using ropes, sharp hooks, and electric shock prods in order to force them to learn circus tricks. The baby elephants scream and cry out as they are stretched out and slammed to the ground.

Once they are captured rodeo-style and prematurely pulled away from their mothers, these babies will be subjected to violent training sessions and never allowed to play outdoors or enjoy anything that is natural or important to them.

View the photos that will convince you never to attend the circus again, and help these baby elephants today.

MDDB: Appeal

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

Please help

The Klang Municipal Council will be putting 40 dogs down on the 15th. Can we all get together to save the lives of these dogs? MDDB proposes that all of us set out to find people who can take one or two of these dogs in temporarily. Once they are out of the pound, we will neuter them and get those, which are adoptable, adopted. Those that no one wants to adopt will be sent to sanctuaries as well as farms willing to take them in. Please help. By pulling off this exercise - not only are we saving their lives but also pushing across the message that Malaysians will no longer tolerate such cruelty. The local councils have no business putting dogs down when they do not have a proper system to manage the strays. They are finding the easy way out. Those willing to temporarily foster these dogs - please write to malaysiandogsdeservebetter@gmail.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 9 DECEMBER 2009

WOOF MEOW CHARITY CAR-NIVAL IS SET TO 'HELP PEOPLE HELP PETS' THIS 12th DECEMBER!

Petaling Jaya, 9th December 2009 - The Woof Meow Charity Carnival is all set to take place on the 12.12.09 from 10am- 6pm at the Sports Plaza PJ (Lot 14, Jalan Bersatu Seksyen 13/4).

This fund raising event is being held to raise much needed funds to help independent pet rescuers and animal welfare organizations to continue with their efforts in addressing animal welfare issues in. Malaysia.

Proceeds of the Charity will go to the Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better and Furry Friend Farm; two animal shelters in Malaysia which practice a No-Kill policy. All proceeds will be spilt between the both of them.

This fund-raising event is led by Shyam Priah with help from friends Subashni Bahsu, Petri Marttinen and Daphne Iking– "just your simple average citizens who care about the environment and the disturbing issues that concern our society," says leader of the pack, Shyam.

Shyam and friends are no strangers to volunteering and doing their part in "giving back to the community". Early this year, they spearheaded Sampah Masyarakat, an organization to tackle the Malaysian malady of littering through voluntary cleaning efforts. Armed with only gloves, rakes and shovels, 50 kind-hearted souls cleared the rubbish and litter left behind by the 1.3 million devotees that visits Batu Caves during the annual Thaipusam celebration.

This time around, Shyam and friends were saddened by the plight of the 300 stray dogs or so, that were rounded up by Pulau Ketam residents and deported to an isolated mangrove island to fend for themselves.

Most did not survive as there is no space, no food and no water. Most died trying to swim back. Organizations like Furry Friends Farm tried to help as many dogs as they could. But there is only so much they can do with the limited funds and resources that they have.

Educating the public in the areas of pet care, importance of spaying and teaching owners on raising their pets the right way, BESIDES sheltering stray animals, requires more than just time and passion. These independent organizations often run low on funds, proving a hindrance to their efforts.

"That is why we need funds to assist them as well as to educate pet owners on responsible pet ownership, and we hope to achieve with this charity drive," adds Shyam.

The event will also see a celebrity car wash with the radio and TV personalities, led by Daphne Iking and Friends. Among those who have agreed to volunteer are Rina Omar, Amber Chia, Ben Ibrahim, David Lai as well as the top winners of the recent Malaysian Ford Models Search, Kelly Jagan and Danny Lim.

Some of the other activities besides the Carwash would be:

1. Jumble sale
2. A pet adoption drive
3. Malaysian female rally driver, Gina Finanza will be there with her rally car to talk about her career
4. A Mini owners group will be doing a drive by, titled Doggies in Minis.
5. A sassy PDRM K9 unit demo
And lots more!

The event will also see the largest honorary tribute ever done for pets in Malaysia.
The event is planned to be eco friendly by using Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Alternative soap which took 3 months to prepare!

Please help us spread this message around. We need cars and volunteers who are keen on having lots of fun with soap suds and water!

For more information, please contact:
Shyam (019 665 2387) or Daphne Iking (019 700 0066)

Signature Campaign

POPIKO MAIL

ME - Dreaming of what I would do if i could sink my fangs into the local council people.

Our director of signature campaign - Ms Shalini Cheenapop Kiki-Mae

A local council dog catching team dragging a dog into their van after using a primitive stone age loop to catch the poor dog - pix taken by my human who was called a vile name for trying to save the dog.

A friend's dog which was caught and released by the dog catchers after the owner went practically on her knees begging for her pet back. They had used a wire loop which had entangled in the dog's mouth.

We are simply fed-up that local councils are still very very primitive in their methods of countering the overpopulation of strays. The best way ever would be to implement the trap-neuter-release method instead of hunting down stray dogs and sentencing them to death. But getting this across to the local councils or the state government is akin to speaking to a thick, thick, thick wall. So, we have decided to embark on a signature campaign which will be presented together with a memorandum to his Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor. We believe that Tuanku is our only hope to make the local councils implement a more humane method, more so that we have been told that certain local councils will be using poisoned chicken parts to murder feral dogs which are difficult to catch! Please support us. MDDB has also appointed Ms Shalini Cheenapop Kiki-Mae as the coordinating director of the signature campaign. Please write to cheenapop@gmail.com for the signature forms. The forms will be immediately mailed to you. We canines will be forever grateful if you can help us get the much needed signatures. All signatures must be accompanied with full name and identity card number. Thank you and please help us.
Woof, woof, woof,

"KLANG DOG POUND : IS THIS YOUR DOG?”

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: SPCA Selangor <spca@streamyx.com>

Subject: "KLANG DOG POUND : IS THIS YOUR DOG?"

News Release from SPCA Selangor

For immediate release on 4th November 2009

"KLANG DOG POUND : IS THIS YOUR DOG?"

This dog gazes out expectantly, hoping that his owner will come to get him out

1 DECEMBER, KLANG – Majlis Perbandaran Klang (MPK) is urging dog-owners and animal rescuers to come forward to claim more than 40 dogs in their dog pound, caught by their dog-catchers one week ago. The municipal had contacted SPCA Selangor and requested for help in creating awareness about the plight of the pound dogs, as their time was quickly running out.

The dogs were caught in the Bayu Perdana, Jalan Meru and Bandar Baru Klang area. Many of the dogs were wearing collars and were in good condition – they seemed to be lost or straying pets. The others appeared to be strays or long-abandoned pets,

they are in poor condition – emaciated, infested with ticks and with skin problems. Both pet and stray dogs appeared to be distressed – the pound was the last place on earth where they wanted to be.

Pet and stray dogs are waiting for a second chance at the MPK Pound

The SPCA Selangor Inspectors and vet visited the pound on Tuesday, bringing with them 2 big bags of dog food and medication. The dogs were being fed bread and water daily and the kennels were cleaned out by the staff.

Many of the strays have skin problems and are emaciated

MPK and SPCA Selangor have agreed that it will impose compulsory neutering as a condition of release for the claimed dogs – to prevent unwanted litters in the future. Owners can claim their dogs until the

9th of December 2009, after which the dogs will be open for adoption to animal rescuers and animal lovers until the 14th of December 2009. There will be a discounted rate on the reclaimation fee for all dogs.

Unclaimed dogs will be euthanized on the 15th of December 2009.

Please contact En Zakaria from MPK at 016-3864459 for enquiries on claiming the dogs or e-mail kesihatan@mpklang.gov.my

MDDB: ADOPTION DRIVE - PLEASE FORWARD

December 3, 2009 - http://malaysiandogsdeservebetter.blogspot.com/

ADOPTION DRIVE

KRAMER

Dear all,

we have brought forward our adoption drive by a week due to other events that we have to attend next week.

Besides having our usual adoption drive - we will also be raising funds to go towards the acupuncture and physiotherapy treatment for Kramer - the four-month-old puppy suffering from nerve injury.

Kramer was hit by the moving electric gate at his human's house. Not able to care for him anymore - his humans surrendered him to us and we hope to do everything possible to try to get his hind legs working again.

The vet says that Kramer is suffering from a nerve injury which could be reversible.

We are thankful that he is not paralysed and has good bowel movement as well as some leg movements.

Come to our adoption drive venue to meet little Kramer.

Those wanting to donate canned and dry dog food, rice, dog shampoo, towels and toys to the MDDB half-way home can also drop the items off at the adoption drive.

See you there.
