Cliff-hanger! Lion cub saved by mum in dramatic scenes caught on camera as he cries out pitifully for help

Clinging on for dear life to the side of a vertical cliff, the tiny lion cub cries out pitifully for help.

His mother arrives at the edge of the precipice with three other lionesses and a male. The females start to clamber down together but turn back daunted by the sheer drop.

Eventually one single factor determines which of them will risk her life to save the youngster – motherly love.

The drama begins: The mother arrives at the edge of the cliff as her son cries out for rescue after being trapped when he slipped

On the brink: Four lionesses look over the edge before aborting their rescue mission because of the sheer drop

Slowly, agonisingly, the big cat edges her way down towards her terrified son, using her powerful claws to grip the crumbling cliff side.

One slip from her and both animals could end up dead at the bottom of the ravine.

Just as the exhausted cub seems about to fall, his mother circles beneath him and he is snatched up in her jaws.

She then begins the equally perilous journey back to the top. Minutes later, they arrive and she gives the frightened creature a consoling lick on the head.

The dramatic rescue, captured by wildlife photographer Jean-Francois Largot, was played out in Kenya's Masai Mara game reserve.

Despite the presence of wardens to deter poachers, day-to-day life for the lions is not without its dangers … as the cub learned the hard way.

Good Day PASS team,

We have recently come across these family of 7 while doing volunteer work in Charis Old Folk's Home in Relau, Penang.

The home is a charity home and don't have the capacity to take care of the dogs.

They are not in a healthy living condition and don't have proper food.

We are urgently looking for adopters to take in the mother and 6 pups. The home can no longer afford to place the dogs there for fear of health problems with the elderly, and also funding to feed the dogs. They have to remove the dogs in a week or 2 from now.

Currently 2 pups (1 male 1 female) have been sent to Peng Aun Veterinary Penang and is boarding there for treatment because 1 has maggot infestion in an open wound and another has some skin problems.

We are now paying for the treatment, but we hope we can get some form of assistance to get medical treatment for them, to get them vaccinated, spayed and most importantly have them adopted by animal lovers

We appreciate if your society can provide us any form of assistance.

my juniors found a dog wandering near HSBC bank closed to Taman Jawa, Butterworth (near ferry terminal) on 01/07/11 (Friday) evening and they brought him to me. i've put up notice (paper or facebook) but i've been waiting for 4 weeks but no one request. Guess it's being abandoned =(

I'm taking care of him temporarily as i'm still a student and i'll be going back to Sabah as soon as i finish my final exam in Sept. so i need to help him to find a new owner. is it ok if you could help me to post this on your GrASS wall so more people can know bout this?

25 wild dolphins are facing a tormented life of captivity because
Resorts World Sentosa wants a new attraction. But our global outcry
can make the whole project a public relations disaster, and secure
their freedom. Sign the petition to free the saddest dolphins, and
fight the wild-captured dolphin trade:

The pod was swimming peacefully in Samoa when nets closed in from
behind -- trapping 25 wild dolphins for a luxury resort's latest
exhibit. They are now locked in tiny pens, starved of food -- but we
can free them.

For wild dolphins captivity is torture, their powerful sonar bounces
off the walls back at them -- as if they are trapped in an endless
house of mirrors. Most die young from stress induced illness, but some
even commit suicide. If the wealthy Resorts World Sentosa succeeds in
keeping them captive then half the dolphins will die in the first 2
years -- and it will legitimise the widely banned practice of
capturing dolphins in the wild. We can't let that happen -- let's use
our voices to set them free.

Resorts World was forced to abandon plans for a whale shark exhibit
two years ago because of the huge outcry that threatened their
reputation. Let's build a massive call now to free these intelligent,
beautiful creatures -- and make this a turning point in the fight to
end the global wild-dolphin trade. When we reach 500,000 our petition
will be delivered to Resorts World and the media. Sign now and forward

others are butchered. By ordering wild-caught dolphins, Resorts World
is driving up demand for these barbaric hunts.

The trade of wild-captured dolphins must end. The world is moving
slowly but surely in this direction, and our intervention could set a
valuable precedent. Resorts World has buckled under pressure before,
and it can't afford another hit to its image. Let's join our voices
urgently to free the world's saddest dolphins, and win a crucial
battle in the fight to save all wild dolphins from short, miserable

ROCKY a.k.a The Rockster, the three-legged wonder dog, has many important and interesting people as friends and one of them is Miss World Malaysia 2009 Thanuja Ananthan.
Thanuja met Rocky when she learnt of him from the person who had rescued him from Batu Caves almost a year ago.
"I visited Rocky several times at the veterinary clinic where he was undergoing treatment and became one of his admirers,'' said Thanuja.
Rocky suffered severe nerve damage to his right front limb due to an accident and had to undergo amputation of that limb.
He has also been vaccinated and neutered.
Rocky has been in the custody and care of canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) since his discharge several months ago.
Thanuja, who added that Rocky will always have a place in her heart, is also hoping that he'll find a good home soon.
"He deserves a family that will love and care for him and I hope he'll get adopted soon,'' said Thanuja.
Rocky, who is slightly over a year-old, will be one of the dogs at the MDDB adoption drive at Jaya One, Petaling Jaya this Sunday.
The adoption drive from 11.30am to 7.30pm will be held at Block NB1, facing Station 1 and Old Town White Coffee.
Meanwhile, MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai Rocky appears to be oblivious of his dissability.
"He runs like the wind and can be very full of himself.
"If he were a human being, he would most probably be a pompus, self-opinionated and self-admiring individual,'' said Lai with laugh.
She added those wanting to donate things to the canine welfare project can bring the things to the adoption drive.
"We need dry and canned dog, puppy, cat and kitten food, dog and cat shampoo, bleech, towels, old newspapers and washing soap,'' said Lai.

An animal lover, Dana, rescued 3 kittens & she had to give them away immediately as her mother is not fond of cats. She tried to send them to the Penang SPCA but was turned down as the kittens had eye infections & flu.

She contacted us here at GrASS & has managed to send the kittens to Peng Aun Veterinary Clinic located at the following address:

We are in need of funds to pay for the vet bill as Dana is a student, she does not have the capacity to foot this bill.

XENA WHEN SHE WAS A PUP.

CANINE welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) will be holding its usual adoption drive at Jaya One, Petaling Jaya from 11.30am to 7.30pm on Sunday April 17. The adoption drive will be located at Block NB1, facing Station 1 and Old Town White Coffee. Among the canines put up for adoption is a puppy named Xena that was adopted from MDDB in Oct lat year.

"Xena's current owner thinks he cannot spend much time caring for the puppy anymore because of a drastic change in his work schedule.

"So, we have taken Xena back and putting her up for adoption,'' said MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai.

According to Lai, Xena is a smart young dog that is both gregarious and loving.

"We hope a family will take Xena in as she is very good with children,'' said Lai.

Besides, Xena, about 15 other puppies will also be available for adoption at the event.

MDDB will also be at the Petz PowWow organized by Petz Unleashed Sdn Bhd on April 16 and 17 at Mines Square, Mines Shopping Mall in Seri Kembangan.

"We have been given a booth and will be selling some of our merchandise as well as putting-up some puppies for adoption,'' said Lai. Guests can participate with their pets in various interesting events such as the Best Dressed Pet Contest, Most Photogenic Pet(s) & Owner Contest and Best Pet & Owner Lookalike Contest. Other events there include owner and Pet Food Eating Contest for which Canadian Pizza will be sponsoring pizzas.

Lai is also appealing for funds, to pay for escalating veterinary bills, as well as items needed for the MDDB half-way-home.

"We need dry and canned dog, puppy, cat and kitten food, old newspapers, dog and cat shampoo, old towels, rice, cages, detergent and bleach,'' said Lai.

The Serdang cat Killer will be at a press conference tomorrow (Sunday, March 6) at Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hin Wah's service center. The address is 1121-1B, Jalan Sekolah, Kg Baru Seri Kembangan. Please be there. Police reports will be lodged at the police station there after the press conference followed by an official complaint lodged with the Department of Veterinary Services on Monday. Pet shop abuses their dogs for sale (PENANG)

The Penang Green Animal Shelter & Sanctuary (GrASS) received this from a lady who visited the petshop known as TNT in Bayan Lepas and sent us the information & some photographs.

Hi I went to a pet shop today (1st March 2011, Tuesday) with a friend. They have three shelties and 2 collies there. I was asking them about the shelties and I noticed one of the girls working there...she grabbed one of the shelties by the neck like how mother dogs grab her puppies and just flung the dog out of the cage.. the dog did not yelp. Then I asked her about the gender of the three shelties, she walked in and tried to reach for one of the shelties and when she did that I saw the dog crouch down like it was in fear. and when she reach out to another sheltie which was in the cage who was trying to run away she just grabbed it by its tail and yanked it out of the cage.. I was surprised the dogs did not yelp but I felt hurt to see them being treated like this Is there anything we can do? they look ok like healthy dogs but yanking the dogs like this is not the way to treat them. she is selling them for 3K. local.

ADDITIONAL ADOPTION DRIVE

OVERWHELMED with puppies, MDDB will have an extra adoption drive this Saturday in addition to the usual monthly event at Jaya 1 on Sunday.
The adoption drive this Saturday will be held outside the Taman Chi Liung veterinary clinic located at No 16, Lintang Menalu from 11.30am to 5.30pm.
The clinic is on the same row as the Taman Chi Liung Public Bank.
There will strictly be only puppies at the Taman Chi Liung adoption drive.
MDDB's monthly adoption drive at Jaya1 will be held the following day where there'll be both puppies and dogs, which are in need of homes.
The Jaya1 adoption drive, which is from 11.30am to 7.30pm, will be held at Block NB1, which faces Station 1 and Old Town White Coffee.

The adoption at the second venue is in conjunction with a one day art boot camp aptly named Art is Enterprising which will attended by a pool of visual artistes of various genres.

Another accident victim

One of our Klang volunteers found this dog today and was told that it had met with an accident about a month ago. The vet says a car or motorbike must have run over its front paws which are almost severed. Luckily, the dog had been constantly licking the wound and prevented it from turning into a maggot wound. Its two back legs had also become considerably thin and the vet thinks the dog may not be able to walk again. Apparently, the dog had been lying in the same spot and someone had been feeding it daily. She is now under our care and we have admitted her to a veterinary clinic in Klang.

Kota Kinabalu Chapter

We now have a panel clinic in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah and it all started with this dog. Our friend Mandy had gone to visit her husband's office there and found this dog, which is believed to be paralysed. The dog was being taken care off by an independant rescuer who could not afford to take it to the vet. Mandy did that for her and managed to strike an arrangement with the vet. The lady's who is caring for the dog, will most probably be our representative there and will use the clinic to neuter strays in KK and give them the necessary treatment and vaccinations. We will now work on raising funds for the KK dogs in both Sabah and Sarawak. According to Mandy, the dog which has demodex may also be suffering from distemper as the vet told her that there was a distemper outbreak in KK currently. The dog is now admitted at the Sabah Animal Medical Center and we are hoping it will recover soon.

Its heartbreaking.

Today her owner called us after someone had alerted her about seeing this dog's photo in our blog. The poor dog's name was DeDe and apparently she had wandered out of the compound because the gate was no properly latched when her owner's sister had gone to the nearby shops. DeDe had followed the lady but must have wandered away to unfammiliar grounds. The family had looked for her for over two weeks - little knowing that she was being treated in a nearby clinic. DeDe died suddenly and the vet says it must have been due to serious internal injuries. However, we believe DeDe would have fought hard to live if she had been reunited in time with her people. She must have pined for them and that's why she gave up. We are heartbroken after speaking to DeDe's owner - if only their paths had crossed earlier. Dear people - please be careful when you are getting in and out of your home if you have a dog. Please ensure that you gate is properly latched. Please also make sure that your dog gets to go out only if it is on a leash.

URGENT HELP NEEDED

Dear people, we are in desperate need of your help. We have about 12 young dogs aged between 8 months to a year old. We are desperately looking for fosterhomes for them as the boarding cost at the clinics is making us go bust. Our ha;f-way-home is full to the brim and we are desperate. Given the large number of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens under our care – MDDB and MCCP will be holding an impromptu adoption drive this Sunday Sept 19.
The adoption drive will be held between 11.00am to 7.00pm.
The drive will be held at No 59, Jalan 5/58, Taman Gasing Indah, Petaling Jaya (same row as Gasing Veterinary Hospital).
Donations of dry/canned dog/puppy food, dry/ canned cat/kitten food, old newspapers, dog and cat shampoo, old towels, rice, cages, detergent and bleach are welcome.

ADOPTION DRIVE

Dear all,

this time of the year is always very frightening for us due to the large number of rescues. This is because the mating season was just over. We now have with us countless dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Given this we will be holding our adoption drive at The Summit Subang Jaya this Sunday Sept 12 from 11.00am to 7.00pm. We are also very short of dog and puppy dry and canned food as well as only have a bag or two of rice left. This is a very difficult phase. So would be happy and thankful to receive rice and kibbles for our dogs and puppies. Hope to see all of you there.

Dear people,

our email had been hacked recently and our friends and supporters received mails saying one of us was in Scotland attending an animal welfare conference and was stranded. The writer asked for money to be transferred via Western Union to an address there. When a friend asked for a name - the hacker gave one of our names. That is identity theft. We were surprised as this name is rarely or hardly mentioned on the blog. He or she must have painstakingly gone through the entire blog prior to hacking our email. Anyway, we made the necessary reports and initiated investigations. We were told our email was hacked from South Africa - IP add - vodacom.co.za:41.26.219.250. We also traced the address in Scotland . The hotel management and local police were then immediately alerted. We had also contacted Vodacom. We do not know the progress in both places as yet. Our email has since been retrieved and the necessary measures have been taken. So, people do be careful when a similar thing happens.

Why we need land so urgently?

What they do to strays?
Beat them up, torture them, butcher them, shoot them with rubber bullets to kill them after catching them in an inhumane manner.

Now, we want to have a center not only to help the domesticated stray animals but also the wildlife as there are plans to build a second animal testing facility in Malacca, Malaysia.

The first one was found in Bukit Mertajam, Malaysia but has yet to be exposed.

GrASS requires Land & Building Funds

As of June 2010, GrASS is now about 1.5 years old. GrASS is currently aiming to raise funds to acquire land on the mainland of Penang, Malaysia as land on the island itself is scarce & very costly. With this in mind, GrASS has decided to bring together a few other animal shelters & independent pet rescuers whom have the same goal in mind to make it all come true.

Because we do not have land, we are limited to the number of strays we are able to take in. Our shelters are fosterers, rental of boarding facilities from pet shops/ pet care centers and our own homes.

We have successfully re-homed about 30 dogs & cats in total so far and have about 15 more in hand which we hope will get a home real soon. Where possible, we adopt as many as we can and care for them to provide them a great life in a home with loving families.

Here are the details regarding the land required:

Land size: 4 acres
Price: Approximately Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) 6.00 per square feet
Sum: Approximately MYR 1.05 million

Building funds are estimated to reach about MYR 5 million which we hope to include, utilities connections (water, sewage, drainage, piping, communication lines, electrical connections etc), shelter areas for animals brought in, animal hospital/clinic,workers hostel, shelter necessity storage facility etc.

Upon turning 2 years old, GrASS would seek help through applying for a few of the RSPCA Sponsorship Programmes that have been listed on their site one at a time until each goal has been accomplished where it is needed the most.

Launch of Malaysian Cats Care Project (MCCP)

Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII) will its feline welfare project this Sunday, Aug 15 at the Summit Subang Jaya from 11.00am to 7.00pm. Named Malaysian Cats Care Project (MCCP) this feline chapter will do for cats what Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) does for dogs. Maybe that Salak Tinggi MP should ask this question in Parliament.

After all the billions talk in PKFZ, nobody would notice a twenty thousand dog figure worth RM700K reported in The Star on page 7 of Star Metro on Apr 1.

Now PKFZ has been conveniently shelved when billions of Ringgit disappeared into several pockets! The Government think the rakyat are just fools and time will make them forget about this massive corruption scandal!

Too Efficient Lah!!! Dog Day Afternoon.... (way to go for Productivity improvement)

As we are striving to improve our incomes and productivity via The NEM to replace NEP, somebody somewhere is already leading us in productivity improvement. On page M7 of The Star's Metro today, there was apparently 20,000 stray dogs caught in ONE MONTH just under the Sepang Municipal Council jurisdiction. It seems that most of the strays were rounded up in Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi.

Two contractors were assigned to do the job. The key is that RM35 was paid for each stray rounded up. So we are talking about RM700,000 here... 20,000 dogs divided by 30 days is 666 dogs a day (the number must be sheer coincidence). I assume you work 12 hours a day, which meant that you must round up 55 dogs an hour, or almost 1 dog a minute.

One dog a minute! Even if you employ 10 people I doubt very much you can get one dog a minute, mind you, you still have to chase, round up, corner, leash them, and then haul them into the van - how the hell you do one dog a minute??

We should remember that these strays caught will have to be certified by an officer from the Sepang council's environmental health department as well, and we haven't even talked about where they were placed or how were they being treated or euthanised? I would love to see a compound with 20,000 strays because if you do it up a bit, it could be a wonderful theme park/zoo - forget Legoland or Universal Studios.

Then I will have to question, does the municipality of Sepang has even 20,000 strays... or is it another redrawing of election district borders? Another thing is, does the municipality of Sepang has even 20,000 living human beings?? Or is Sepang like New Zealand where they have more sheep than humans living there. Then I think we should try for the Guinness Book of World Records as the only bloody place on earth with more dogs than humans!! Malaysia Boleh!!!

I shudder to think if the 20,000 figure is one month one off only or has been going on for a few months - if its the latter, then the case is pretty ridiculous, its like the RM2,000 hammer.
Don't you think that we have had enough of these corruption nonsense?

I think the BN Govt has run out of ideas for corruption! Maybe next time, they'll pay RM10.00 for each cockroach or each ant!!!

Eugene is desperately looking for a family that would take Rocky in. Rocky was rescued after he was run over by a motorcycle several months ago. One of Rocky's front paw has some permanent damage but the 9-month old puppy is not debilitated by it. We have also some very cute puppies with us. They live on an open piece of land and are exposed to rain and shine. Our friend Rena visited the spot last week and says it broke her heart to see them huddled together in the rain. Four are female and its dangerous to allow them to remain there as they must be spayed. Please help us catch them. We are trying to arrange a rescue mission this weekend. Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better will hold its monthly adoption drive this Sunday July 11 at the Summit Subang Jaya from 11.00am to 7.00pm. This time around there will be a large number of puppies due to the many rescues carried out last month. We will also be bringing some adult dogs over. We are also in urgent need of puppy food and hope well-wishers will provide us with some. MDDB needs dry and canned puppy and dog food, dry and canned cat food, dry and canned cat and kitten food, rice, old newspapers, dog and cat shampoo, old towels and bleech. We also welcome cages and carriers.

How much is the doggy?

HEROINE the puppy was seen loitering around the guardhouse of a gated community in Puchong by a resident two weeks ago.
Fearing that the little puppy might be crushed by moving vehicles, the woman rescued the puppy and handed it over to canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB).
MDDB dewormed and treated Heroine and put her up for adoption.
"Heroine was a very lucky puppy as she was adopted on the same day she was put up for adoption by a family living in Petaling Jaya," said MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai.
She said MDDB worked hard to ensure that all their rescued puppies and dogs found good homes like Heroine.

"That's why we hold our monthly adoption drive. It is also to make space for other homeless puppies and dogs rescued," she added.
This month MDDB's adoption drive will be held at the Summit Subang Jaya on Sunday.
"We will be located at the Summit entrance from 11am to 7pm with over 20 dogs and puppies," said Lai.
She said a family of seven short-legged puppies rescued by MDDB would be among the batch of puppies put up for adoption.
The monthly drive is also to raise funds, food and other necessities to care for the rescued dogs and puppies.
"We depend on public donations to feed our rescued canines as well as pay our veterinary bills," she said. She also said that MDDB's feline chapter, Malaysian Cats Care Project (MCCP) would take off in August.
"We have been rescuing cats and kittens as well and it is time we started a separate platform for them," she said.
She said MCCP also needed food for the rescued felines.
"We need dry and canned food for dogs and cats, old newspapers, pet shampoo, old towels, rice, cages, detergent and bleach," said Lai.

we are in dire need of help as dogs and puppies have been literally raining on us the past month and we are strapped for cash. There have been several rescues of accident victims, the latest being Friday evening. (We will post pics of this dog later.) Funds needed for rescued dogs

THE director of a non-governmental organisation is appealing for public help to fund a canine welfare project initiated by her organisation called Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

Firoza Burhanudeen said CDII's Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) canine welfare project was in dire need of funds to treat, foster and rehome the dogs and puppies rescued regularly.

"The number is increasing by the day and our expenses are also escalating," said Firoza.

"Normally, we rescue the mothers as well and neuter them before finding them a home or sending them to live on farms.

"As the mothers are strays, most of the time the puppies are weak and need a lot of care and nutrition before they are ready for adoption,'' said Firoza.

She said MDDB also funded independent rescuers to neuter as well as treat dogs and puppies rescued by them.

"We also take care of puppies and dogs which are rescued from the pound and these usually cost us a lot of money in veterinary care as they usually come infected with either distemper or parvo or both which they get from the pounds,'' said Firoza.

She said caring for dogs and puppies infected with distemper and parvo was expensive as it involved a lot of supplementary care.

According to Firoza, MDDB is also caring for eight older puppies with severe skin problems in its half-way home.

"This usually involves at least six months treatment before they are put up for adoption,'' she added.

Firoza added that MDDB's rescue and advocacy could only continue with public support.

"We need funds urgently as we do not receive any corporate or permanent funding as not many perceive animal welfare as something important,'' she added.

Firoza is appealing to Malaysians to come forward to help MDDB in its quest to help the strays.

"Help us help these unfortunate dogs and puppies.

"We are in dire need of your help as we are in the red due to escalating expenses which includes the monthly rental and utilities for our half-way home,'' she added.

HELP NEEDED

Dear people,

as all of you know MDDB's rescue work is never ending with puppies and dogs being taken off the streets almost on a daily basis. But we have also been rescuing from the pound and most of the puppies rescued come with distemper or parvo. We keep them at our quarantine center and treat them for at least six months before they are ready for adoption. We currently have several such older puppies and are in need of your help to pay for their medical needs. Those who are coming here through Malaysiakini - WELCOME. Please go through our blog and every little help we get from you would be greatly appreciated. Here are the young ones that currently need your help. All have been vaccinated and neutered.
Besides, them we also have younger puppies as well as an accident victim at the Mayo Veterinary clinic in Subang Jaya to care for. Updates on that later.
This is Mona and she is one of the last two surviving puppies from the Klang pound rescue that were still under our care. Mona tested positive for distemper after her rescue and had all the clinical signs. She was one of the five distemper puppies fostered by Mandy and was returned to us about three months ago after she tested negative for the deadly infection. All the other four had succumbed to distemper with Mona being the only survivor from the group of five. Since she was on a drug regime to counter distemper, Mona developed demodex and is now under treatment. We believe we would need to treat Mona for demodex for only two months going by the six months we took to treat Luca, whose condition was really severe.

This is Queen and her feline friend Tommy. Queen and her two siblings were born to a six month old pup during its first heat. The family was rescued by by a MDDB supporter from Kajang anout a year ago. They were directly brought to our vet in Klang and two of the pups, including Queen, and the mother tested positive for distemper. One puppy died, whilst the mum, Queen and the other sibling survived. Only Queeen had skin problems after the treatment. Her sibling lives with her human family in Sri Petaling, whilst her mother was adopted by a family in PJ. Queen is currently in the final phase of her demodax treatment and we hope to rehome her and Tommy together. Tommy was given to us as a kitten by a family that had seriously neglected him.

This is Monique. Monique and her sister were given to us when they were about a month old by independent rescuer Eileen Ng. Both pups were suffering from a severe skin disorder whereby the mites were actually found under the skin layer. The vet had advised for the pups to be put to sleep. Soon after that they tested positive for parvo and Monique's sister did not make it. Monique was in a worst off condition than her sister but we were determined to ensure that she survived. We got the vet to put her on drips and nursed her at our half-way-home around the clock whilst the vet made daily house calls to check on her. Today she is a vibrant and highly excitable puppy who is out of quarantine and ready for adoption.

This is Kapi who was rescued from Kapar. She was rescued together with her mum and four siblings. All had severe skin problems with Kapi and her mother being the worst. All have been adopted and her mother sent to live on a durian farm in Raub. Mum dog, who had no fur at all at the time of rescue, is healthy now and is very happy in her new home. Kapi, meanwhile, is getting better by the day and her skin is improving by the day. She is a very clever young dog who can open her cage and she often does this. Her favourite activity is letting herself out of the cage and 'partying' when no one is at the half-way-home.

This is Mimi and she was given to us by a pork seller who was advised to put her to sleep because she tested positive for distemper. The pork seller refused to tell us where he got her from and we didn't ask him too much questions for fear that he may change his mind about giving her to us. She was about two months when she came to us. The intensive distemper treatment has resulted in her suffering from skin problems as well. Mimi is very shy and came out of quarantine about 4 months ago. Mimi again

Pogo was rescued from being caught by the Klang dog catchers by a Klang resident some months ago. He was the only one who managed to escape. He had severe skin problems and had been treated for it. He is in the final stage of his treatment and is ready for adoption.

This is Tiger. He too was rescued by a Klang resident from the dog catchers noose. He suffers from mange and is currently undergoing treatment. He is a very hyper fellow and loves his evening play sessions at the half-way-home garden. He has at least to to three more months of treatment before his skin condition gets better.

This is Shankar and together with Mona is the last of the Klang pound pups still with us. He suffered from parvo and corona virus upon his rescue. He had had an existing skin condition which became worse during his treatment and subsequent treatment. The vet told us he has no lesions anymore and his fur would probably grow back in a month or two with treatment.

KLANG MP Charles Santiago had made over 100 attempts to contact Klang Municipal Council (MPK) acting health director Zulkifli Abbas over the mistreatment of dogs by the council. He is yet to respond. Who does he think he is? Does he expect the MP to call on him? Has he forgotten that he's a civil servant being paid with the people's tax RM? On Wed, the MPK dog catchers threatened a domestic helper bodily harm and grabbed the two dogs she was walking. They abused the dogs and threw them into their van to be taken to the pound. Little Forrest among 12 puppies up for adoption

CANINE welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) is hoping plucky puppy Little Forrest finds a loving home at its adoption drive at the Summit Subang Jaya shopping complex on Sunday (June 13).

The adoption drive at Summit's main entrance will be held between 11am and 7pm.

MDDB adoption coordinator Christine Lai said Little Forrest was rescued from the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) pound in February.

"He was rescued by an animal activist who visited the pound. Little Forrest was very sick and had countless ticks on him,'' said Lai.

Thanks to the dedication of his rescuers, he pulled through after being put on drips and given a blood transfusion.

Currently, after being discharged from the clinic last week, Little Forrest is a happy puppy in need of a loving home.

Ready to be loved: Little Forrest is no longer little but still waiting to be adopted.

She added Little Forrest had almost died on several occasions at the clinic after his rescue.

Luckily he had pulled through and Lai attributes this to the puppy's fighting spirit.

"He has a strong will to live and fought very hard to survive. Sadly, most of the puppies rescued with him succumbed to various illnesses they contracted at the pound,'' said Lai.

Besides Little Forrest, MDDB will also be putting up more than a dozen puppies for adoption at the adoption drive this Sunday.

According to Lai, MDDB rescues many puppies monthly and always in a dire need to locate good homes for them.

"People have also taken to leaving puppies at our door step and because of this we are always full house,'' said Lai.

Lai added MDDB has also started to actively rescue cats and kittens and would be launching a feline rescue group called Malaysian Cats Care Project (MCCP) soon.

Those wanting to donate cash and kind can also drop their contributions off at the adoption drive this Sunday.

Hi All,

I'm sending this email to ask if anyone or know of anyone who would like to adopt 'Puppy' and give him a good home to stay in. He's a 1 year old Spayed male mongrel. He's an affectionate boy with very good temprament. He's very intelligent and semi trained (well he know's how to sit and stay just from the short period we trained him) and is active whom loves the water. He is also current with all his vaccinations. We initially found him living at the house we were staying during our holidays in Penang and grew fond of him thus taking him in. However, we are back in Melbourne and found out that the owner of the house does not want him there. We then organise another arrangement for Puppy to stay at another place. However, due to the changes in circumstances of the person taking care of him, that person is no longer able care for Puppy as well

We wanted to bring him over to Australia but due to his unknown origin and the strict quarantine rules in Australia, we were told we are not allowed to do so. Hence it saddens us but we have no choice but to send him to SPCA Penang. SPCA has named him HAPPY due to his nature….happy.

We would hate to see him euthanise as he's such an intelligent and affectionate dog. If any of you are thinking of getting a dog or knows of a person who's thinking of getting one, I hope you would consider Puppy/Happy. This is a plea from the bottom of our heart.

ADOPTION DRIVE

Several of the puppies rescued from the Selayang Municipal Council pound are finally well enough to be adopted.
Canine welfare group Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better's (MDDB) adoption coordinator Christina Lai said the puppies were now awaiting adoption at a veterinary clinic in Subang Jaya.
"Those interested in giving these puppies, that had gone against all the odds stacked against them and survived, can contact us,'' said Lai.
In addition to the pound puppies, MDDB also many new rescued puppies and dogs for adoption.
"People have now resorted to coming and leaving puppies at our doorstep and we are once again overwhelmed with countless puppies and dogs,'' she said.
As usual MDDB will be having its monthly adoption drive at the Summit Subang Jaya on Sunday, May 16 from 11.00am to 7.00pm.
"We hope people come and show us their support by adopting these unfortunate puppies and dogs,'' said Lai.
She said MDDB could continue their rescue work only if the puppies and dogs that were currently with them were all adopted out.
"We hope our puppies will all be adopted this Sunday as there are many more puppies that are roaming the streets and would probably all end-up dead soon if we don't rescue them as soon as possible,'' said Lai.
She also added that MDDB has also started taking in cats and kittens.
"There are just far too many strays due to poor management techniques by the local councils. The Best method is always the Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) method and it's a pity that the authorities here are not receptive to the idea.
Lai said MDDB also looked forward to receiving contribution in cash and kind to help the organisation continue with its mission.

MDDB: UPDATES- KTM Dog Dies In Sleep & Other News

R.I.P

When it rains, it pours. KTM, the dog abused by the KTM workers, died in his sleep yesterday. He was very frail but had a hearty appetite. It was only on his last day that he showed some respiratory problems and it is believed he was infected with distemper. We think he must have been infected in the ten days he spent at the Selayang pound given that almost all the puppies rescued there by Animalcare tested distemper positive. Many had died from the time of rescue. There was someone called Leong who wanted to see KTM and claimed she had been feeding him for the last two to three years at the station. Leong also told us that the KTM workers often tormented and abused the poor dog. When we told her to wait for a while until he stopped being so panicky, Leong had said KTM may die soon because he had been very frail. We are sorry Leong, for telling you to wait - because you were right - he was indeed frail and died before you could see him. But we are still not able to understand why someone who cared so much for him allowed him to be continuously abused by the KTM workers. The only comfort we have now is knowing that KTM was given love and attention for the period he spent under the care of our fosterer - who ensured that he was fed with his favourite chicken everyday. What has happened to KTM will only push us to pursue our civil suit against KTM, the Selayang Municipal council and also the Klang Municipal Council. We had initially not planned to initiate legal action against the Klang Municipal Council but after learning that their dog catchers had to actually be taught to catch dogs - we were told we had grounds to sue.

WE THINK WE MADE A MISTAKE

In Feb this year a young lady e-mailed us about a 7 to 8 month old black puppy she had started feeding near her rented room in Cheras. The puppy, which had a serious skin problem, was frightened of people and would run off whenever the young lady tried to touch it. We advised her to befriend the dog and the young lady diligently fed the dog daily and spent time trying to gain its confidence. She succeded several weeks later and asked us if she could bring the puppy to us in Klang. We were afraid to take the pup in given the distemper cases we were taking care off. So, we asked another rescue group to help out and we believe we made the biggest mistake in doing so. She was first boarding in a clinic - where the vet says she was doing fine - but removed and taken to their place where she became gravely ill. It was not distemper or parvo - but we now believe that since the puppy is known to be frightened of people - she had kept away from the people as well as the other dogs there..... to the extent of starcving herself. In the process, she became undernourished and developed ulcers. She must also have tried to run from the other dogs as there was a deep cut on one of her paws - which led to her suffering in pain and trying to bite of the infected paw. We took her in a week ago and tried to help her regain her health but the poor girl showed little improvement. So we rushed her to an animal hospital on Sunday night where she was immediately put on drips and given antibiotics and pain-killers. We hope that the pup named Dumex - will survive - otherwise we would all be very deeply effected with what had happened to her. Sometimes, it is so difficult to help some strays - which are just too frightened to trust people. Please pray for Dumex.

GOOD NEWS

We have some good news - Lester was adopted today by one Datin Jeniffer Khoo and has finally left the veterinary clinic to go and live in a nice big house in Petaling Jaya.

We are happy that we gave him a second chance in life and did not bow to pressure to put him to sleep.

His entire treatment cost RM5,600 but the vet gave us a RM600 discount.

Every sent spent was worth seeing how happy Lester was to finally leave the clinic.

He has healed well and merely needs good food and TLC to get back on his feet.

We learnt a bit more about him from the lady who has been feeding Lester for the past five years.

Apparently, he was adopted by a family she knows as a puppy but the family dumped him at the market when he was about a year old.

That was five years ago - although the lady had been feeding him the last five years - we do not understand why she had condoned him being turned into a stray.

She has forwarded a pix of him as a pup and we can see how much he must have suffered after being dumped.

Because he was lived on the streets for that many years - Lester is anemic and according to the vet has to be on medication for life.

Anyway, we are happy that he now has a good family to take care of him.

Canine group to sue KTMB over stick-in-a-dog

KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 — Tying up a stray dog with a stick shoved down in throat could see national rail operator Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) in a court house soon.Canine welfare group, Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB), is pursuing legal action against KTMB for allegedly torturing the dog, ironically named KTM for the place where it was found.

"We'll file a civil suit," MDDB coordinator M. Mala told The Malaysian Insider.

"Once we file, it'll be a precedent."

The KTM dog incident first garnered public attention through a complaint letter titled "Ghastly animal abuse at Kepong KTM Station," written by M. Nisha to Malaysiakini on March 17 this year, where the writer explained how she and a group of commuters had found the dog in a tortured condition two days earlier.

KTMB had issued a statement in response, admitting that their staff had caught the stray dog and tied it to a fence. However, KTMB denied intentionally shoving a piece of wood down the dog's throat, stating that the dog bit on the wood and refused to let go of it after KTMB staff tried to use the wood as bait.

KTMB further explained that the reason they caught the stray dog was because it had bitten passengers before, though none resulted in serious injuries.But concerned commuters alerted the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) which immediately went to the station but failed to find the dog as it had been released.

However, the SPCA team managed to locate the brown patchy dog at the Selayang dog pound about a week later, upon which they handed it to MDDB.

"Our lawyers are looking at how members of the public can be plaintiffs," said Mala.

Currently, the lawyers are in the process of drafting an affidavit. The civil suit is expected to be filed in a couple of months, Mala added.

"We have animal activists coming up offering to be plaintiffs," she said.

When asked on the amount of damages MDDB is seeking from KTMB, Mala said that they are not seeking for damages.

"We don't want their money," said Mala point-blank.

Instead, Mala said that they want KTMB to contribute to any animal welfare group, though not necessarily MDDB.

In terms of contribution, KTMB could contribute to things like infrastructure, she added.MDDB is a canine welfare initiative spearheaded by the NGO Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

They have rescued and placed hundreds of puppies in homes since 2008, according to Mala.The dog, KTM, is now residing at a veterinary services clinic, she said, and the MDDB is currently looking to adopt him or foster him.

Reactions from other animal groups towards the alleged KTM dog abuse have been varied.

"We have all the laws. Unfortunately, authorities don't use it," SPCA chairman Christine Chin told The Malaysian Insider.

Malaysian laws on animal cruelty are considered weak compared to similar laws in other countries. Section 44 of the Animal Act 1953 (2006 Amendment) punishes animal cruelty offenders with a RM200 fine or six months imprisonment.

In contrast, Singapore imposes a RM23,000 fine or one year imprisonment. Hong Kong animal cruelty offenders are fined RM90,400 or three years imprisonment. Thailand's fines for animal cruelty range from RM100 to RM10,000.

Although animal lovers had petitioned the government in 2007 to increase the fine from RM200 to RM10,000, and to increase the jail term from six months to two years after the horrific abuse of a German Shepherd named Sheena came to light, nothing was changed.

"Where there is no enforcement, abuse continues," Chin said.

However, Petpositive president, Anthony Thanasayan, said that animal groups should not demonise KTMB as there was no proof that KTMB had abused the dog.

"(The abuse) could have happened, but I find it unlikely that KTM would do such a thing," said Anthony.

Petpositive is an NGO dedicated to providing animal-assisted therapy for the disabled and elderly.

"NGOs must be responsible in their accusations, not go around on a witch hunt to call KTM monsters," Anthony added.

"No one was there. No one could prove anything."Anthony, who is also the chairman of Canine Advisory Teams of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and the Klang Municipal Council, added that animal groups need to work together in their lobby for animal rights.

THE SO-CALLED CANINE ADVISORY COUNCIL WHICH CLAIMS TO LOOK INTO THE WELFARE OF STRAYS IS ORGANISING DOG CATCHING SPREES IN TANDEM WITH LOCAL COUNCILS. IT IS HAPPENING IN KLANG.. WE WERE ALERTED OF THIS BY AN ANIMAL ACTIVIST.

ANY COMMITTEE WHICH PRIDES ITSELF OF TAKING CARE OF ANIMAL WELFARE MUST NOT INVOLVE ITSELF IN DOG-CATCHING ACTIVITIES.

THE PERSON WHO HAS ORGANISED THIS EVENT HAD GONE ON A DOG CATCHING SPREE IN PETALING JAYA LAST YEAR AND HAD INVITED PAWS TO GO ALONG.

PAWS HAD TURNED DOWN THE INVITATION.

WE HAVE PROPOSED THAT A CANINE PROTECTION COUNCIL - MADE-UP OF ANIMAL ACTIVISTS, RESCUERS AND SHELTERS BE SET UP TO REPLACE CAT.

PLEASE WRITE TO AND DEMAND FOR THE COMMITTEE TO BE DISBANDED.

WE GONE ON OUR ROUNDES IN KLANG LATE LAST NIGHT AND FOUND SEVERAL FEEDERS STANDING AROUND LOOKING TROUBLED. THEIR COLONIES OF DOGS WERE ALL MISSING. WE SUSPECT THAT THEY WERE CAUGHT BY THIS DOG CATCHING SPREE. THESE DOGS ARE NOT A NUISNACE AND ONLY COME OUT AT NIGHT. SHOPKEEPSRS IN THE AREA THAT ALSO FEED THE DOGS; SAY THE CANINES HAD KEPT THEIR PREMISES SAFE FROM BREAK-INS. SOME OF THE MISSING DOGS HAVE BEEN SPAYED.
WE WERE ALSO INFORMED BY A FORMER CAT COMMITTEE MEMBER THAT THE KLANG DOG CATCHERS HAVE HURT AND MAIMED MANY DOGS BUT THE CAT COMMITTEE HAD COVERED THE MATTER-UP.
THIS IS DESPICABLE.

IF MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE PERSIST WITH THEIR FOLLY - THEY JUST HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT THE REVIEW PERIOD FOR COUNCILLORS IS UP THIS JUNE. WE WILL CAMPAIGN TO ENSURE THAT COUNCILLORS INVOLVED IN THIS GRISSLY DOG CATCHING EXERCISE ARE NOT RE APPOINTED

HERE IS WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP.

CONTACT THESE ORGANISATIONS AND TELL THEM ABOUT THE ILL-TREATMENT OF ANIMALS IN THE LOCAL COUNCIL POUNDS AND HOW THE CAT COMMITTEE PROTECTS THESE COUNCILS. TELL THEM THAT THE CAT COMMITTEE WHICH IS ALSO MADE-UP OF ANIMAL WELFARE GROUPS IS GOING WITH THE LOCAL COUNCILS ON DOG CATCHING SPREES.
TELL THEM THAT THE CAT COMMITTEE IS ALL FOR EUTHANASIA AND AGAINST TRAP NEUTER AND RELEASE.
THAT THE CAT COMMITTEE THROWS SPANNERS INTO THE WORK DONE BY INDEPENDENT RESCUE GROUPS.

SAD NEWS

1) We were informed that Rolex passed away this morning. He had just received his second jab for TVD. The drugs generally weakens his immune system - and poor Rolex had contracted distemper and tick fever recently. MDDB would like to thank his rescuers Leigh and Joanne for not abandoning him or taking the easy way out by putting him to sleep. They fought hard to save his life and we are certain that Rolex died knowing there were people who cared for him. To his previous owners who dumped Rolex when he was taken ill - we have no words to describe the disdain we feel for you. The fact he had contracted TVD also tells us that he was a pet who was not neutered and allowed to roam around indiscriminately. Both Leigh and Joanne will collect his remains from the vet tomorrow for burial.

2) We are also sad to inform that three of the five puppies rescued by E-Ching from the Klang pound and handed to us have died. The dead one includes this cute little puppy who was not given the chance to grow-up. All had multiple-viral infections and green feces which the vet says was indicative of liver damage. But didn't the CAT committee say that puppies would not be caught anymore by the Klang dog catchers and that the pound was being regularly disinfected? To you liars - we are too repulsed to call you the vile names that you deserve.
