MDDB: UPDATES- KTM Dog Dies In Sleep & Other News

KTM

R.I.P
When it rains, it pours. KTM, the dog abused by the KTM workers, died in his sleep yesterday. He was very frail but had a hearty appetite. It was only on his last day that he showed some respiratory problems and it is believed he was infected with distemper. We think he must have been infected in the ten days he spent at the Selayang pound given that almost all the puppies rescued there by Animalcare tested distemper positive. Many had died from the time of rescue. There was someone called Leong who wanted to see KTM and claimed she had been feeding him for the last two to three years at the station. Leong also told us that the KTM workers often tormented and abused the poor dog. When we told her to wait for a while until he stopped being so panicky, Leong had said KTM may die soon because he had been very frail. We are sorry Leong, for telling you to wait - because you were right - he was indeed frail and died before you could see him. But we are still not able to understand why someone who cared so much for him allowed him to be continuously abused by the KTM workers. The only comfort we have now is knowing that KTM was given love and attention for the period he spent under the care of our fosterer - who ensured that he was fed with his favourite chicken everyday. What has happened to KTM will only push us to pursue our civil suit against KTM, the Selayang Municipal council and also the Klang Municipal Council. We had initially not planned to initiate legal action against the Klang Municipal Council but after learning that their dog catchers had to actually be taught to catch dogs - we were told we had grounds to sue.

WE THINK WE MADE A MISTAKE

DUMEX ON DRIPS AT THE HOSPITAL
DUMEX ON HER ARRIVAL AT OUR PLACE
DUMEX ON THE DAY OF HER CAPTURE
DUMEX ON THE DAY OF HER CAPTURE
In Feb this year a young lady e-mailed us about a 7 to 8 month old black puppy she had started feeding near her rented room in Cheras. The puppy, which had a serious skin problem, was frightened of people and would run off whenever the young lady tried to touch it. We advised her to befriend the dog and the young lady diligently fed the dog daily and spent time trying to gain its confidence. She succeded several weeks later and asked us if she could bring the puppy to us in Klang. We were afraid to take the pup in given the distemper cases we were taking care off. So, we asked another rescue group to help out and we believe we made the biggest mistake in doing so. She was first boarding in a clinic - where the vet says she was doing fine - but removed and taken to their place where she became gravely ill. It was not distemper or parvo - but we now believe that since the puppy is known to be frightened of people - she had kept away from the people as well as the other dogs there..... to the extent of starcving herself. In the process, she became undernourished and developed ulcers. She must also have tried to run from the other dogs as there was a deep cut on one of her paws - which led to her suffering in pain and trying to bite of the infected paw. We took her in a week ago and tried to help her regain her health but the poor girl showed little improvement. So we rushed her to an animal hospital on Sunday night where she was immediately put on drips and given antibiotics and pain-killers. We hope that the pup named Dumex - will survive - otherwise we would all be very deeply effected with what had happened to her. Sometimes, it is so difficult to help some strays - which are just too frightened to trust people. Please pray for Dumex.

GOOD NEWS

LESTER, ON THE DAY HE WAS RESCUED
WORTH EVERY CENT. THANK YOU FOLKS FOR HELPING US TO HELP LESTER.

LESTER AS A PUP BEFORE HE WAS ABANDONED AT THE PETALING JAYA OLD TOWN MARKET.

LESTER ON HIS WAY TO HIS NEW HOME.

CAN'T WAIT TO LEAVE THE CLINIC.

ON HIS WAY TO A BRAND NEW LIFE.

We have some good news - Lester was adopted today by one Datin Jeniffer Khoo and has finally left the veterinary clinic to go and live in a nice big house in Petaling Jaya.

We are happy that we gave him a second chance in life and did not bow to pressure to put him to sleep.

His entire treatment cost RM5,600 but the vet gave us a RM600 discount.

Every sent spent was worth seeing how happy Lester was to finally leave the clinic.

He has healed well and merely needs good food and TLC to get back on his feet.

We learnt a bit more about him from the lady who has been feeding Lester for the past five years.

Apparently, he was adopted by a family she knows as a puppy but the family dumped him at the market when he was about a year old.

That was five years ago - although the lady had been feeding him the last five years - we do not understand why she had condoned him being turned into a stray.

She has forwarded a pix of him as a pup and we can see how much he must have suffered after being dumped.

Because he was lived on the streets for that many years - Lester is anemic and according to the vet has to be on medication for life.

Anyway, we are happy that he now has a good family to take care of him.

Defender of animal abusers

KTM is examined after it was handed over to MDDB. — Pictures courtesy of MDDB

KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 — Tying up a stray dog with a stick shoved down in throat could see national rail operator Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) in a court house soon.Canine welfare group, Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB), is pursuing legal action against KTMB for allegedly torturing the dog, ironically named KTM for the place where it was found.

"We'll file a civil suit," MDDB coordinator M. Mala told The Malaysian Insider.

"Once we file, it'll be a precedent."

The KTM dog incident first garnered public attention through a complaint letter titled "Ghastly animal abuse at Kepong KTM Station," written by M. Nisha to Malaysiakini on March 17 this year, where the writer explained how she and a group of commuters had found the dog in a tortured condition two days earlier.

KTMB had issued a statement in response, admitting that their staff had caught the stray dog and tied it to a fence. However, KTMB denied intentionally shoving a piece of wood down the dog's throat, stating that the dog bit on the wood and refused to let go of it after KTMB staff tried to use the wood as bait.

KTMB further explained that the reason they caught the stray dog was because it had bitten passengers before, though none resulted in serious injuries. But concerned commuters alerted the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) which immediately went to the station but failed to find the dog as it had been released.

However, the SPCA team managed to locate the brown patchy dog at the Selayang dog pound about a week later, upon which they handed it to MDDB.
"Our lawyers are looking at how members of the public can be plaintiffs," said Mala.

Currently, the lawyers are in the process of drafting an affidavit. The civil suit is expected to be filed in a couple of months, Mala added.

"We have animal activists coming up offering to be plaintiffs," she said.

When asked on the amount of damages MDDB is seeking from KTMB, Mala said that they are not seeking for damages.

"We don't want their money," said Mala point-blank.

Instead, Mala said that they want KTMB to contribute to any animal welfare group, though not necessarily MDDB.

In terms of contribution, KTMB could contribute to things like infrastructure, she added.MDDB is a canine welfare initiative spearheaded by the NGO Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

They have rescued and placed hundreds of puppies in homes since 2008, according to Mala. The dog, KTM, is now residing at a veterinary services clinic, she said, and the MDDB is currently looking to adopt him or foster him.

Reactions from other animal groups towards the alleged KTM dog abuse have been varied.

"We have all the laws. Unfortunately, authorities don't use it," SPCA chairman Christine Chin told The Malaysian Insider.

Malaysian laws on animal cruelty are considered weak compared to similar laws in other countries. Section 44 of the Animal Act 1953 (2006 Amendment) punishes animal cruelty offenders with a RM200 fine or six months imprisonment.

In contrast, Singapore imposes a RM23,000 fine or one year imprisonment. Hong Kong animal cruelty offenders are fined RM90,400 or three years imprisonment. Thailand's fines for animal cruelty range from RM100 to RM10,000.

Although animal lovers had petitioned the government in 2007 to increase the fine from RM200 to RM10,000, and to increase the jail term from six months to two years after the horrific abuse of a German Shepherd named Sheena came to light, nothing was changed.

"Where there is no enforcement, abuse continues," Chin said.

However, Petpositive president, Anthony Thanasayan, said that animal groups should not demonise KTMB as there was no proof that KTMB had abused the dog.

"(The abuse) could have happened, but I find it unlikely that KTM would do such a thing," said Anthony.

Petpositive is an NGO dedicated to providing animal-assisted therapy for the disabled and elderly.

"NGOs must be responsible in their accusations, not go around on a witch hunt to call KTM monsters," Anthony added.

"No one was there. No one could prove anything."Anthony, who is also the chairman of Canine Advisory Teams of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and the Klang Municipal Council, added that animal groups need to work together in their lobby for animal rights.

SAD NEWS

1) We were informed that Rolex passed away this morning. He had just received his second jab for TVD. The drugs generally weakens his immune system - and poor Rolex had contracted distemper and tick fever recently. MDDB would like to thank his rescuers Leigh and Joanne for not abandoning him or taking the easy way out by putting him to sleep. They fought hard to save his life and we are certain that Rolex died knowing there were people who cared for him. To his previous owners who dumped Rolex when he was taken ill - we have no words to describe the disdain we feel for you. The fact he had contracted TVD also tells us that he was a pet who was not neutered and allowed to roam around indiscriminately. Both Leigh and Joanne will collect his remains from the vet tomorrow for burial.

2) We are also sad to inform that three of the five puppies rescued by E-Ching from the Klang pound and handed to us have died. The dead one includes this cute little puppy who was not given the chance to grow-up. All had multiple-viral infections and green feces which the vet says was indicative of liver damage. But didn't the CAT committee say that puppies would not be caught anymore by the Klang dog catchers and that the pound was being regularly disinfected? To you liars - we are too repulsed to call you the vile names that you deserve.

Kuala Lumpur: Missing Dog -- INDI

Date: Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 6:46 PM

Dear all doggie friends

My name is Winnie and I have lost my little dog, INDI & I am sending you folks a .jpg format of 'INDI is Missing' flyer. It contains her pix and all her details.

I got all your emaill addresses from an article 'Animal Whisperers' in yesterday STAR,14 April 2010, from the Star Two pull-out, and I think you guys are doing a swell job in helping animals.

I am hoping that you folks could do me a great favour by emailing the Flyer to all the doggie contacts and organisations you are in contact with to see if anyone has seen her or have taken her in for safekeeping? INDI's a friendly and loves car rides.

I could do with some help in finding INDI please, as I am doing this single-handedly and find that i am not covering places far and fast enough.

I am afraid that someone's picked up INDI and has taken her so far away that she is unable to find her way home without some help.

In all your dogs/pets 'search & rescue' missions, could you folks keep a look-out for INDI?

A dog looking like INDI was last seen running on the grass divider in the middle of Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi, in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, from the area near the Balai Polis Taman Tun down towards the intersection towards 1 Utama shopping complex. have (posters & flyers) covered all the Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi main roads & offshoot roads. Will be doing the Jalan Aminuddin Baki & its offshoot roads.

I have covered the areas of Medan Damansara, Damansara Heights, Sri Hrtamas, Desa Sri Hartamas, Bangsar and parts of Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

If any of you see a dog looking like INDI, could you take a pix of her with your handphone camera and send it to me at 013-3506873 or 013-3068278. I do not have easy access to the internet and computers unless I go into the office, which I haven't been doing so as I am out combing the streets, looking into houses and calling out to INDI. I have also left posters in pet supplies shops and at veterinary clinics.

can you please help?

my heartfelt thanks
winnie

Article: Animal whisperers : Young animal rescuers By SHARMILA NAIR

Animal whisperers
Young animal rescuers
By SHARMILA NAIR
Adopting pets is a good thing. However, before you head over to the nearest animal sanctuary, you need to know what taking care of your pet entails.

THE Earth does not revolve around humans. Unfortunately for animals, humans often forget that.

For years, animal welfare organisations like Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB), PAWS Animal Welfare Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) have been advocating animal rights and trying to get humans to accept them.

Recent news of the appalling conditions at the Selayang Municipal Council dog pound in Selangor got the public riled up. Photographic evidence of the tick-infested, malnourished and injured dogs at the pound shocked the public. Many were horrified at how the animals were mistreated, and animal activists cried foul over the ill treatment. Fortunately, there are also many kind-hearted souls who are determined to right the wrong done unto the defenceless, and strive to educate people to treat animals better.

When Joanne Deborah Scott heard that some of the stray dogs in her neighbourhood were put down using rubber bullets, she decided to take matters in her own hands. The 24-year-old photographer decided that she would start with what she could do, such as rescuing and taking in stray dogs and cats.

Annabelle Lim, 15, participates in the dog adoption drive at The Summit USJ in Subang Jaya organised by MDDB on every second Sunday of the month.

Joanne partnered up with her friend Kelvin Koay to set up an animal shelter and sanctuary in Penang four years ago because they just couldn’t stand by and do nothing about the cruelty that animals face.

“It is my duty to help the animals because they cannot speak up on what is done to them. They are basically powerless to do anything,” says Kelvin who shelters, feeds and vaccinates stray dogs and cats sent to the Green Animal Shelter and Sanctuary (GRASS).

At this shelter, they believe strongly in the animals’ sanctity of life; they hold the principle of not putting down their animals and have never had to do so. Joanne and Kelvin have thus far managed to rescue animals and turn their lives around on limited resources.

They keep the animals in their homes temporarily, and convince their friends to open their homes to strays.

The duo, however, believe that ultimately the key to ensuring a better world for animals lies in educating pet owners.

Kelvin believes that biggest mistake an owner makes is not spaying their pets because of the general misconception that neutered animals get fat and lazy.

“This is very irresponsible because when a new litter of puppies is born, the owners do not find a new home for them. Instead, they will leave them at public places like the market, which contributes to the increasing number of stray dogs,” he notes.

Kelvin thinks that some people are cruel to animals because they believe they can get away with it as the penalty for animal abuse or negligence is not severe enough.

Joanne and Kelvin with some of the dogs that they have rescued.

The Section 44 of Animal Ordinance (1953), states that a party found guilty of an offence of cruelty shall be liable to a fine of RM200 or to imprisonment for a term of six months or both. Joanne doesn’t believe that the punishment justifies the cruel acts.

Says Kelvin: “The Government should impose a heavier fine for owners who do not take good care of their pets. All living things deserve a good life and that is what GRASS is doing – trying to find good homes for stray animals so that they will also have the chance to feel how it is like to be loved.

“My main agenda is to have people be more responsible and caring towards pets and other animals.”

One doesn’t even have to be mature to start caring for animals. Mirrsha Dhivya was only five when she found a box with eight newborn kittens. She was on her way back from kindergarten when she heard the kittens mewing pitifully, with their eyes barely open.

Mirrsha and her sister Resha Reya insisted that their mother give the unwanted litter a loving home. Not too long after that, Mirrsha rescued another four kittens. A dozen kittens however proved to be too much of a handful.

“We decided to put them up for adoption. My mother advertised in the newspaper and we managed to give all of them away. We kept one kitten, Ducky,” says Mirrsha, now 13.

Resha (left) and Mirrsha, have helped over 40 cats to find decent homes.

Since then, the girls have been rescuing cats and looking for homes for them.

With their mother’s help, they clean, feed and take the cats to the vet for vaccination and spaying. Of course, their parents are the ones who usually foot the hefty bills.

Mirrsha and Resha have successfully found homes for over 40 cats to date, and have even rescued puppies and birds.

“We found a bird with a broken wing and nursed it until it became healthy. Once it was okay, we set it free,” says Resha, 11. Unfortunately, not everybody is able to turn their homes into animal shelters. For those who are unable to bring the strays to their home, they go to them instead.

Tay Pei Shen and Annabelle Lim may not have started an NGO to rescue animals, but they, too, do what they can. The secondary school students have been volunteering at animal shelters like Paws Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) for more than a year now.

“I just go over to the PAWS shelter and walk, bathe and play with the dogs and cats there,” says Pei Shen, 15.

Annabelle recently organised a donation drive called Pause for PAWS in her school where proceeds went to the animal shelter. She also participates in the dog adoption drive at The Summit USJ shopping centre in Subang Jaya, Selangor, which is organised by MDDB on every second Sunday of the month.

“As a student, there isn’t much I can do for the abused animals but I know that I could help raise funds for the organisations that could actually make a difference. That’s why this year, I’ve chosen not to only help PAWS but also MDDB by running another donation drive at my school,” says Annabelle.

“I just go over to the PAWS shelter and walk, bathe and play with the dogs and cats there,” said Tay Pei Shen, 15.

She notes that while there are adults out there who do not encourage their children to work with animals, her parents have always been different. “My parents are very supportive and are animal lovers themselves. They agree to all the programmes I organise because they know they’re for a good purpose. They were the ones who encouraged me to run the donation drive in school when I first had doubts that the proposal would not be accepted by my school’s management,” she adds.

ADOPTION DRIVE

SAM
The Mange Brothers

Dear people,
MDDB will be holding its monthly adoption drive this Sunday. We still have the Selayang and Klang puppies for adoption in addition to those rescued off the streets. Among the pups and dogs available for adoption this Sunday are three out of the four mange brothers from the Puchong pound. The mange brother with the worst skin condition was adopted last month. We were very touched when the family, which adopted him, selected the puppy that was that had the worst skin condition amongs all the puppies there. Their contention was that they were there to help us by giving one of the rescued puppies a home and the best way to do that would be to take the one that needed help the most. He is now much better with his hair growing back. Hopefully more people like this familiy would come to our adoption drive this Sunday.
Date: Sunday, April 11
Venue: Summit Subang Jaya, near the Starbucks enterance.
Time: 11.00am to 7.00pm
Details: 019-3576477, 012-3739007, 017-2081844

MDDB: HELP - PLEASE FORWARD TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE

Need Help

Dear people,

our finances are in the red again - and when we say red - we mean dark dark red. We owe a lot of vets money and have also used up our resources to pay for medicines and vitamins for our rescued puppies and dogs. We also need to pay our rental, utilities as well as helpers' allowance. The Klang and Selayang puppies, especially, took-up most of our resources as most of them had been very very ill.

Here what we need money for.

1) This old girl, now named Shriya, was found wailing and crying, in a car park in Subang Jaya. She was rescued by a motorist who had parked her car there and handed over to us. She is under the care of one of our fosterers and was recently diagnosed with failing kidneys. We need to put her on prescription food and kidney supplements which are both very expensive. Shriya is about 8 years old.

2) Senior White, Ms Husky and Forrest are still at the vets because they are not completely well. They have been there from the day of the rescue and we reckon their treatment and boarding is going to cost us. We have already paid the vet partially for the other pups admitted there including Ebony who had to undergo a blood transfusion.

3) Rolex too is at the same vet and he apparently has other healh issues including veneral disease. The treatment for that is quite expensive and we have to raise money for that as well.

3) Remember Lester? He too is still admitted at the vet's for various other problems and we reckon that he is going to cost us thousands as his treatment was extensive. The vet says he is having tick fever and cannot put on weight eventhough he eats a lot.

4) We have no picture here but a old male dog was rescued in Section 19, Subang Jaya and admitted at Mayo Clinic in Taipan. We owe the vet about RM1,400 for heartworm treatment, vaccination, castration and boarding. He has since been sent to the Furry Friend's Farm.

5) We still have our pups who have either been rescued from the pounds or off the streets that are suffering from either distemper, parvo or demodex that are still with us. In addition to that we also have several mother dogs awaiting neutering.
Please help us raise some funds. Details are as follows:

Re: For ADOPTION: A Dog & A Cat (Penang)

Dear Friends,

Attached are pictures of the dog and cat that has been taken in from the streets. The rescuer would be very grateful if someone would give them a home or recommend someone for each of them.

The dog is female and not spayed yet. It is not an old dog as you can see and can be trained.

The cat is female and will be spayed soon. It is 1 year old.

For those who are interested please contact: grass.pg@gmail.com

Thank you.

MDDB: PLEASE FORWARD TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE

The dog which was tortured by the KTMB staff has been found. Thanks to the sharp eyes of SPCA's Murugan who spotted the dog at the Selayang Pound. We sent our friend Erica Chum to the pound and she waited for Selayang councillor Gunaraj George to gain entry.
SPCA was also there but was not allowed in by Evil Ernie. It took a good scolding by Gunaraj who also called her boss Dr Dr. Razif Zainol Abidin - 012-2252240, razif@mps.gov.my to tell him off! We think that they were feeding the dogs and getting the place clean before letting these people in.
So has anything changed at the Selayang pound? We think not other than the fact that four workers have been transferred out but the biggest culprit Evil Ernie is still there.
By right its this woman who has both shamed and humiliated the Selayang Municipal Council that should have been transferred. Coming back to the dog, the SPCA, which came there to collect a mother dog and three puppies, agreed that we take the KTMB dog as we are looking into initiating legal action against KTMB.
Apparently, the dog catchers who had gone to the train station to capture the dog told Gunaraj they had been called umpteen times after Nisha's letter in Malaysiakini had created a ruckus. The dog had not wandered very far from the station, probably due to injuries and fear, when the Selayang catchers found it.
Therefore the KTMB people were lying through their teeth when they said the dog had wandered off. They had tried to get rid of the evidence by harassing the Selayang people to come and get the dog as soon as Nisha's letter was out.
We are now looking at initiating legal action against KTMB and have individuals who have come forward to be named as plaintiffs. We also have some young lawyers who have offered to initiate the legal action for free. We think we would also simultaneously initiate legal action against the Selayang pound for cruelty.
Those who want to be a part of this please contact us as soon as possible.
P/S So Mr SOH of DVS, we have the evidence now - will you take any action against the culprits?

MDDB- KTMB

STATEMENT FROM KTMB

20 Mac 2010

to : malaysiandogsdeservebetter@gmail.com

KTM BERHAD'S RESPONSE ON MALAYSIAKINI'S ARTICLE ON THE CAPTURE AND TORTURE OF STRAY DOG AT KTM KOMUTER KEPONG SENTRAL STATION

The complaint letter by M.Nisha (Ghastly animal abuse at Kepong KTM Station) in Malaysiakini dated 17 March 2010 is referred. KTM Berhad undoubtedly agrees that animal cruelty is not an acceptable behavior by any sane individual. It is uncivilized and intolerable by any religion and race in the world.

As reported, KTM Berhad has confirmed that the incident took place at KTM Komuter Kepong Sentral Station.

For your information, KTM Berhad, represented by a group of its senior officers, had conducted an investigation and went to see the staff at the said station to get more information as well as to visit the location of the incident. Essentially, the unpleasant incident had nothing to do with Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) or any of its employees. The name of the organisation was quoted indirectly when our counter clerk, who was not really aware of the incident, was asked about the situation. The clerk answered on impulse when he said that the dog was 'perhaps' captured and strapped by the officers from DBKL.

Even though his remarks was said by mistake, we are sorry for that he should have had investigated the situation before providing any statement. KTM Berhad is deeply sorry for the situation and would like to apologise to DBKL. It was not our intention to smear the image of DBKL with the incident. We hope DBKL is willing to accept our sincere apology.

With regards to the incident on 15 March 2010, the stray dog was captured by the staff of KTM Berhad with the help from our janitors who work at the station. For your information, the dog has been roaming the station for almost two years, and during that period, KTM Berhad had lodged more than three reports to Majlis Perbandaran Selayang (MPS) via telephone, with the final report made one day before the dog was captured, which was on 14 March 2010.

The necessity to catch the dog was made due to its troubling behavior whereby it had attacked and bitten our passengers at the parking area as well as in front of the KTM Komuter Kepong Sentral Station ticketing counter. However, the attacks and bites did not inflict any serious injuries so far. The last attack was reported on the evening after it was released which involved one Vietnamese passenger. Aside from that, we also found its feces around the platform area and during rainy seasons, the dog posed an inconvenience for the Muslim passengers especially, as its wet fur might touch them.

The decision to capture the dog was made due to the operation requirement, not because of the minister visit as per quoted by our staff. The dog was caught at round 12.00 noon and released at 1.30 pm. According to the staff we investigated, the piece of wood which was claimed shoved into his throat was not true. They did tie the dog to the fence. However, they did not shove the wood into its throat with the intention to torture or inflict injury to the animal. The wood, which was seen in its mouth, was the bait used when they were trying to catch it and the dog kept biting on the end of it. The staff tried to remove it from its jaw but it clamped the wood shut, we only managed to remove it after the second try.

The dog was released because we did not receive any confirmation from MPS to collect the animal. As reported, the dog was still straying around the area after it had been released.

I hope the general public should also appreciate the effort taken by the KTMB staff to address this recurring nuisance towards our KTM Commuter passengers whose patronage and peace has been disturbed by this stray dog. Whilst, we do recognize the method, in this instance, was questionable, it was done purely for the sake and comfort of our passengers. There was no intent of being cruel or to torture the stray dog. Our priority is for the safety and well-being of our passengers.

We will make sure that there will be no similar incident to take place. We have identified more efficient alternatives in handling stray dogs/wild animals, which is by contacting the SPCA and the local authorities to solve the problem at other stations as well.

We do not condone animal cruelty, what more to be a part of the brutality. However, I think the public should also evaluate the original intention it was meant to and not to quickly jump to condemn the method use without understanding the sequence of events. I am sure, all of us, when bitten by a mosquito, will hit it instantly without much thought. Is that considered as cruelty to insects? I know for a fact that, some time ago, when the crows [gagak] cause serious unhealthy situation in Klang, a campaign was mounted to shoot down the crows in a big way when their presence became intolerable. Is there some other way of doing it?

We truly hope that the explanation given is clear and we hope that the incident does not reflect the organisation in general.

Thank you.

MDDB: - COMPLAINT ON THE MALTREATMENT OF ANIMALS IN MALAYSIA BY LOCAL MUNICIPAL OFFICERS

Subject: COMPLAINT ON THE MALTREATMENT OF ANIMALS IN MALAYSIA BY LOCAL MUNICIPAL OFFICERS
To: fazil@ktmb.com.my, datukbandar@dbkl.gov.my, dbkl@dbkl.gov.my, rnc@kwp.gov.my, roslima@kwp.gov.my, zainor@kwp.gov.my, shazril@kwp.gov.my, saravanan@kwp.gov.my, sooria@kwp.gov.my, murugiah@pmo.gov.my

Yang Berhormat Mr. Prime Minister and Menteri-Menteri Dalam Negeri,

I am feeling very disappointed to get emails after emails of the abuse of animals by not only normal citizens, but actual fact, by the specially elected and appointed local government officials.  Do we actually have to complain one municipal council at a time?  Can't we just change for the better as a whole country?  When we want to reach for ONE Malaysia and to be a well established and developed country, how can we mistreat animals this way?  As famous philosopher Mahatma Gandhi has said,

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated".

Please look at the photo attached and the letter sent to the press below.  Nearly every other week, we read such violence by our local municipal officers.  I can't just imagine how much more violent can a person be?  A small little harmless animal will not be able to harm you - why do you want to hurt them like that?  There is certainly a good reason why Tuhan has created dogs, definitely not as "haram" or to be tortured.  They are named as men's best friend, so they are definitely created harmless and to assist humans in different needs like how the Anjing Polis helps and protects their Human Police partner and some helps in gathering and leading flocks.

Anjing liar might be over populated, and the reason is that there is no proper control.  The proper control, like have been stressed by many Animal NPOs, is to catch-neuter-release.  Then, there is no such need to spend our hard earned tax money on bullets to shoot those dogs, but cater the money for government veterinarians to spay and release them.  WE URGE THAT THIS WAY IS USED!

DBKL Officers, it has been reported that your officers are to be blamed for the action shown in the picture.  The stick that has been used to stuff into the dog's throat has also been identified as the pole normally used by council dog catchers.  We want a good explanation on this and we want ACTIONS taken to mend the situation and on the officers!  We do not want our hard earned tax money to pay these cruel officers.

Enough is enough.  A stop have to be put to these cruelty.  We have gone from MBSJ to MPK to MPS and many many more.  Now, DBKL?  Let us take a rest, it is not fun to make complains over our respected government.  I want to be able to say good things to my overseas friends when they come to Malaysia to visit.  I want to be able to say that my Government is a very responsible and empathetic Government.

Please do something.

p.s Hundreds of activists, NPOs, animal lovers and rescuers have been bcc'ed in this email to support the act.

Thank you.  Hope to get a response soon.

Best Regards,
Serene Lee

A concerned citizen and taxpayer.

WHAT'S GOING ON?

Just when we thought we can take a short break from advocacy and update our supporters about our rescue work - this crops up. We are shocked and appaled that human beings can actually resort to such cruelty. The letter says that the six young people were told that the dog had been tied-up like that for quite a while - didn't it kick the conscience of the people who had passed by? Our rescuer friend Miza Nordin says she will go an look for the dog this evening as it definetely needs medical attention. The stick has also been identified as the pole used by council dog catchers. So, there must be truth that the dog was tied in that position by DBKL workers. We called KTM and its public relations officer Fazil said he too was shocked with the pictures. He has asked for emaild to be directed to him and said that he would direct them all to the KTMB president.

Here's the letter which appeared in Malaysiakini. Take a look at the picture.

I am writing because of a grievous incident that took place on Monday, March 15 at about 3pm at Kepong Central KTM Station. My friends and I (six of us) were there to take the train to the Bank Negara station.

After parking our cars, we heard a dog howling, more like a painful cry. Then, we noticed a dog being tied to the grill (steel fence) of the KTM station. As we approached the dog, we stood aghast at the sight.

The stray dog's leg and neck was tied very tightly to the grill and a piece of wood had been shoved down inside its throat! The dog was bleeding and its feces were all around it. The string was attached to a pole in the KTM station.

Immediately, we confronted the KTM workers. They said that it was done by Kuala Lumpur City Hall workers because a minister was to be visiting the station next week. They failed to explain further.

At once, we called the SPCA and the Paws animal welfare society. The SPCA responded efficiently by informing us that an animal control officer would be there soon. We made a slight commotion in front of the KTM station but the KTM workers were not concerned at all.

After about an hour, as we were returning to the KTM Kepong Central Station, we received a call from the SPCA officer stating that the dog was now not tied up and was moving around. When we arrived, the dog was limping. The same KTM workers avoided us as we tried to confront them. A passer-by told us that the dog has been that way for quite some time.

The SPCA officer could not capture the dog as it walked away for quite a distance. He advised us to write to the media and to the SPCA as well.

Doenn't our country's animal rights support the idea that an animal has the right to live its life without being harmed and hurt by humans? We realize that people define the meaning of animal rights and abuse in different ways but aren't the citizens of our country merciful?

This dog could have been just put to sleep if it had been harming the public or causing a nuisance. Why stick a wooden stick down its throat?
