Article: Pot-a-Plant contest for children

Monday June 22, 2009

FRIENDS of the Penang Botanic Gardens Society (FOPBGS) is organising a Pot-a-Plant competition to spread appreciation of nature in the young.

The event, which will start on June 27, is open to 30 children aged between six and 12.

FOPBGS president Datuk Tengku Idaura Tengku Ibrahim said the contestants would learn how to take care of a plant.

"It is our aim to have continuous nature education for children.

"The participants will be provided with a pot, plant, soil and a plant diary. The competition will last for six weeks," she said in a statement.

She said they had to use the diary to record the progress of their plant throughout the competition.

"Participants need to bring back their plant to Botanika Outreach on Aug 8 for judging.

"They will be judged on the condition of the plant.

"Flowers on the plants and a good condition of the plant diary will be a plus point," she said.

The prizes are cash vouchers by Gardenku worth RM100, RM60 and RM40 for the first, second and third winners respectively.

Winners will also get a trophy each. The participation fee is RM10 per child.
