Some two hundred years ago, many rivers in Denmark were straightened, presumably to improve their flow. However, over time, the channels ended up as large drains and even got clogged up with weeds and rubbish. The authorities finally realised their error, and several years ago, these rivers were "redesigned" back to their meandering ways, with pools, runs and cascades.
The magical result was that, not only did the Danes have beautiful rivers back, but the fish like trout and salmon re-appeared even without re-stocking! This drives home the point that if we leave nature to its own course it will heal itself.
This phenomenon is food for thought for us Malaysians. Currently, several rivers, especially in the Klang Valley and Selangor, have been straightened in the name of flood mitigation. Are we repeating the same error?
