Article: Come take the plunge in Trang

Monday May 25, 2009

By TAN SIN CHOW

COUPLES planning to tie the knot can take part in a spectacular underwater wedding ceremony in the Trang province located along the coast of the Andaman Sea in southern Thailand.

Province governor Sompong Anuyouthpong assured couples that it would be a memorable and wonderful experience.

"In February this year, we had 35 couples in scuba gear exchanging their vows in the briny depths during a mass underwater wedding.

"Eighty couples had taken part in such a ceremony before and it has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest underwater wedding," he said.

"Trang also has lovely beaches," he told newsmen after leading a nine-man delegation who paid a courtesy call on Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng at his office in Komtar recently.

The province encompasses 46 islands together with the mainland area.

Its neighbouring provinces are Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung and Satun.

Lim said they were looking for ways to build a stronger bond with the province, especially in trade and tourism sectors.

He said the first governor of Trang province, Khaw Sim Bee was actually a Penangite.

"Evidence of the close historical link between Penang and Trang is in the name of two roads in Penang — Jalan Khaw Sim Bee and Jalan Trang.

"In fact, our strong association can be traced back to more than 100 years," he said.
