THE Star's Go Green programme at the Penang Botanic Gardens tomorrow has received support from B. Braun Medical Industries Sdn Bhd and Queensbay Mall.B. Braun's corporate communications executive Melissa Tan said the company was sponsoring RM1,500 as the money would be well spent on teaching children to love nature.
"We have always been involved in projects related to the well-being and development of children.
"This is especially after the introduction of the B. Braun for Childen programme, a programme for underprivileged children, which started in our headquarters in Germany more than 10 years ago," she said.
Tan commended The Star for organising the project which provides an opportunity for the children to understand their role in protecting the environment.
Queensbay Mall's advertising and promotions manager Wendy Wong said it was sponsoring 130 ceramic mugs and 130 Doraemon and Friends soft toys for the children.
"Queensbay is very conscious about supporting environmental awareness programmes especially those involving the younger generation," she said.
Wong said the contribution of mugs and soft toys was their way of thanking the children for participating in the project.
Penang Down Syndrome Association and National Autistic Society of Malaysia (Penang Branch) advisor Dr Sim Joo Seng said he would bring some 40 children with Down Syndrome and heart disease and orang asli children from the St Joseph's Orphanage.
"It is a worthwhile programme which I hope The Star will organise on a monthly basis to educate the children to appreciate nature," he said.
The Go Green is a free programme organised for children between the ages of five and 12 from 8am to 11am at the gardens.
The project is part of The Star's corporate social responsibility programme to promote environmental awareness in conjunction with World Environment Day.
The event is organised with the cooperation of the Penang Municipal Council and the gardens.
Sponsors taking part include Cup Cakes Passion Cafe which is sponsoring freshly baked cupcakes, Aqua Bike Malaysia which will provide free tram rides for the children and Penang Sudarshan Kriya Organisation which is giving away free enzymes.
Participants are advised to be at The Star's booth at the left side of the gardens' main entrance at 7.30am.
A total of 120 children are taking part in the programme. Registration has been closed.
