Article: TV3’s Karam: Walk, don’t drive

Saturday June 6, 2009

PETALING JAYA: Walk instead of drive for short distances as this will go a long way in caring for the environment, popular TV3 presenter Karam Singh Walia said.

"When a car is driven for a short time, it will not burn fuel as efficiently as when it is driven long distance on a highway," he said.

"The failure to address environmental issues is due to the perception that nature is someone else's problem, said Karam, 50, when met at Sri Pentas in Bandar Utama here yesterday.

Other TV3 personalities – Shahida Azad Jamaludin, Gina Woon and Sasha Bashir – agreed with Karam that the key to protecting nature was for people to have the environment close to their hearts and to start practising small but meaningful acts in their daily lives.

All four TV personalities will be showing their support for conservation by attending the Green Day Celebration 2009 organised by The Star and sponsored by Bonuslink and Philips Malaysia.

Green concern: Popular TV3 personalities (from left) Karam, Shahida, Woon and Sasha sharing a light moment as they chat about their shared concern for the environment at Sri Pentas, Petaling Jaya yesterday.

The event will be held from 8am to 3pm at the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) tomorrow in conjunction with World Environment Day 2009 as part of the "Go Green Live Green" campaign.

The campaign is part of an ongoing project by The Star, which began in 1993. It aims to educate the public on the importance of protecting, preserving and sustaining our environment and how small steps, when combined, can create a major impact on preservation of the environment.

Shahida, 27, who presents the news in Buletin Utama, said there was a need for people to see for themselves the current state of the environment to realise the severity of the situation.

Woon, who reads the news for Berita Terkini, said the public needed to be more aware about the importance of the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
