Article: More Tecoma and Rose of India trees planted

Tuesday May 12, 2009

ABOUT 70 Tecoma and Rose of India trees have been planted in five fields at the residential areas of Tanjung Bungah, Penang.

The effort was undertaken by Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu to make the environment greener and fresher.

With the help of about 15 children from several residential areas nearby, he planted the trees on the field at the Concord Garden located opposite his service centre.

The other residential areas included Taman Seri Setia and Taman Hillview.

Teh said it took them half a day to plant the trees. Another round of planting session will take place next week where some 80 trees will be planted in another five residential areas.

"The planting of the trees is in line with the state government's initiative to plant more colourful trees around the state.

"During the blooming season of the Tecoma trees, beautiful vivid colourful petals such as purple, yellow, pink and white can be seen," he said.

"As for the Rose of India, the flowers are in flushed mauve pink to purple lilac.

"Besides the beautiful blooms, both the trees have broad dark leaves and large crowns that can provide shade from the heat,'' he told reporters after planting the trees on Saturday.

When asked if the trees were sponsored by the state Forestry Department, Teh said two people who wished to remain anonymous, had donated them.

On March 13, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state government hoped to meet its target of planting 75,000 trees by the end of the year in an effort to create a greener state.
