Article: Fruitful Sunday morn for 30

Tuesday May 12, 2009

THIRTY residents of Taman Ghee Hiang in Penang recently sweated it out on a Sunday morning doing something meaningful for the com- munity.

They took part in a gotong-royong jointly organised by Batu Lanchang assemblyman Danny Law Heng Kiang, Jalan Perak Village Development and Security Committee and Batu Lanchang Rukun Tetangga, with the help of the Penang Municipal Council.

Law said the activity was not only for the cleaning-up of the area and clearing of any possible mosquito breeding ground, but it was also vital as a platform for the residents to get together and interact as well as air their complaints and views on how to improve the surroundings.

"Also, as the area does not have its own RT centre, I would suggest they set up one.

"There are many elderly residents who exercise in the vicinity early in the morning, and the setting up of a volunteer patrol team might prevent misfortune in the future," he said.

Law also reminded residents who were 60 and above to collect the registration forms for the state government's proposed reward programme for senior citizens.

"The forms were out on May 1 and they can be collected at all assemblymen's service centres. Photocopied forms are acceptable too.

"The state government has yet to decide on the kinds of re- wards but they might be in the form of money or hospital services," he said.

Law, along with the resi- dents, were seen cleaning drains and gathering fallen branches, leaves and rubbish during the two-hour event.
