Article: Equestrian facility proposed for park

Tuesday June 2, 2009

THE public can look forward to an equestrian facility at the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) Park soon if the proposal is found to be feasible.

The council has agreed to set up a technical committee to study the feasibility of leasing out a 2.02ha plot of land at the park for 35 years to promote the sport of riding endurance.

MPPP has decided to set up a study committee comprising four councillors and this was endorsed at a recent full council meeting.

A working paper will be prepared once the study is completed.

An application by a private company to conduct the equestrian sport at Padang Polo was then rejected as the council is planning to propose the MPPP Park as an alternative venue.

During the meeting, the council also adopted a proposal to change the two-way traffic flow between Persiaran Bayan, Persiaran Bayan 2 and Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim in Bayan Baru into one-way streets.

Council acting president Tan Cheng Chui chaired the meeting.

In his speech, Tan said the council had also taken over the maintenance of the drains and roads in Bukit Bendera from the state Public Works Department.

"We will have to prepare an infrastructure cost estimation for the repair and maintenance works.

"This is an important tourist attraction. So, we are doing the necessary," he said.

He added that the council had also taken over the management of the Komtar public bus inter-change depot from the Penang Development Cor-poration.

"We will upgrade the area as it is currently in a deplorable state," he said.
