Article: Appreciating nature

Sunday June 14, 2009

SEKOLAH Sri Sedaya primary and secondary students had the opportunity to learn more about the environment through the school's Earth Day celebrations recently.

Organised by the school's Young Entrepreneur Club, the event raised funds amounting to RM3,000 towards the adoption of otters in Zoo Negara.

Pupils had the chance to touch the birds and also reptiles at the event.

Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh launched the day-long event and urged students to save the environment through simple everyday habits.

"Heroes are not just the ones that we see in the movies and on television. Everyone can be a hero if we change our habits and lifestyle." she said.

Students were later treated to a snake show and were allowed to take a closer look at certain species.

A petting zoo organised through Zoo Negara also exposed the students to reptiles and birds.

Suzane M Samy of the Malaysian Nature Society also spoke on conservation and ways to save and reduce energy consumption.

The school's secondary division deputy principal Tan See Miin said that students were always taught to play their part in preserving the environment.

"The Earth Day event has not only made the students appreciate nature better, but I believe it will make them change their lifestyles as well."
