Article: Recycling heat is on

Sunday June 14, 2009

THE competition is heating up for 32 schools participating in the F&N Coca-Cola (M) Sdn Bhd (F&NCC) and the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Recycling Campaign.

The Kempen Kitar Semula F&NCC & MBSA 2009 requires schools in Shah Alam to collect items like aluminium cans, plastic bottles and paper for recycling.

Students and teachers of SK Bandar Anggerik with their recycling collection.

With the campaign coming to an end on June 30, schools are intensifying their collection efforts to ensure that they come up tops in the competition.

Based on the current collection data, SK TTDI Jaya seems to have the lead in the primary school category. Their closest rivals are SK Seksyen 9 and SK Seksyen 19.

Meanwhile, SMK Bukit Jelutong principal, Datin Aishah Jaman, was both happy and surprised to hear that her school currently leads the pack in the secondary school category.

She said that the students were really excited about the competition and they would try their best to ensure they remained on top.

"Last year, we came in third in the finals. This year we are hoping to dethrone the 2008 secondary school champ (SMK Seksyen 19)," she said.

Their closest rivals currently are SMK Seksyen 18, and SMK Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh. Both schools have collected 2,738kg and 2,247kg of recyclables respectively.

In last year's campaign, SK Seksyen 9 was the champion in the primary school category.

The school received RM1,300 in cash and a special award worth RM600 for accumulating the highest number of aluminium products.

F&NCC managing director James Teo is pleased with the campaign and said the efforts put in by the schools was very encouraging.

"The healthy competition amongst the schools and the innovative strategies they have come up with to increase recycling efforts are a sign of the commitment and enthusiasm," he commented.
