Article: Ministry: Everyone should save water

Saturday June 13, 2009

PETALING JAYA: Everyone should help conserve water during the coming dry period, the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry said.

Its secretary-general Datuk Dr Halim Man said although the water level at dams were under control, everyone should avoid wasting water.

"The ministry wants the public to quickly report to water operators if they see leaks or broken pipes," he said in a statement yesterday.

The statement said as of Wednesday, the Sungai Semenyih, Sungai Langat and Klang Gates dams were at 100% capacity while the Sungai Tinggi and Sungai Batu dams were at 99% capacity.

The Sungai Selangor dam was at 98% capacity while the Tasik Subang dam was at 87%.

Dr Halim said all dams in Negri Sembilan, Malacca, Johor, Perak, Penang, Kedah, Sabah and Sarawak were also at controlled levels.

"However, the ministry and state water authorities have discussed what actions have to be taken if the El Nino phenomenon that is expected to indirectly affect the country's water supply occurs," he said.

Dr Halim said the ministry had also tasked the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations and the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia to create awareness among the people to save water.
