Article: Only nature lovers visit Fraser’s, says Maznah

Wednesday April 15, 2009

BUKIT FRASER: The drop in the number of visitors to Fraser’s Hill is not a sign of poor promotion or that the highland resort is losing its charm.

Human Resources Deputy Minister Senator Datuk Maznah Mazlan said people stayed away because the place was not an entertainment haven and it only attracted nature lovers and environmentalists.

The former Bukit Fraser Development Corporation chairman said the current one-way route entering the area from the Gap entrance was another factor.

She said the current system of having cars go up at “odd number” hours and go down at “even number” hours was good and practical despite some people who complained of the inconvenience.

“Only nature lovers would have the patience to go up or down the hill,” she told reporters yesterday after opening a two-day seminar of bio-engineering, eco-system evaluation and species organised by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Science and Technology Faculty.

Maznah said there were 46,211 visitors last year compared to 50,128 visitors in 2007.

She added that the huge numbers of visitor to the hill would not affect the environment as it was well taken care off.

She also said the erosion that occurred on slopes at some parts of the hill was because of the natural process of the environment and not due to human factor.
