Article: Going green

Tuesday August 11, 2009
By IAN YEE

WHEN R.AGE first met Yeong Yze Shiuan, she was desperately trying to start an official environmental society in Universiti Malaya (UM). Now she's organising a competition offering close to RM3,000 in prizes to create awareness about climate change.

About six months ago, Shiuan told us about how sad she was that one of the country's premier public universities, which has courses related to the environment, didn't have a society to actively promote sustainable living.

To draw attention to this oversight, she took part in the R.AGE Earth Hour Challenge, where we encouraged students to plan their own Earth Hour events at their campuses.

Shiuan's event was a huge success, catching the attention of the university authorities.

Yeong Yze Shiuan (front row, right), pictured here at the Climate Change Leadership Training in Bogor, Indonesia, has been busy taking on our R.AGE Earth Hour Challenge for Universiti Malaya.

Since then, Shiuan's environmental efforts in UM have really taken off. The lecturer-led group UM Cares have been given more attention, and they were able to start a student group known as E=MC2, which translates into Malaysia Can Change for A Better Environment.

The group already has active members in Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and they hope to expand it into a full-fledged inter-campus society advocating sustainable lifestyles.

Their upcoming event, organised and sponsored by UM Care, is a essay, video and photo competition for UM students titled "When I was young ...", aimed at helping students realise how much the climate has changed.

"We want the students to compare the situation now with how things were back then (when they were young). I think if we all tried to recall those days, we'd realise that a lot of things have changed. For example, I think a lot of us can't live without air-conditioning now," she explained.

Shiuan herself is motivated by memories of her childhood. She grew up in Gurun, Kedah, and remembers the weather was never as hot as it is now.

"When I was living in Gurun, we sometimes didn't even have to turn the fan on in the afternoon, and we would sleep without the fan too. Now people can't do that, let alone stay at home in the afternoon without air-conditioning," she said.

Another poignant memory for Shiuan is how people used to pack food in tiffin carriers. "These days everybody uses styrofoam or plastic disposable containers. I think many of us can remember tiffin carriers many people would use years ago," she added.

It might be a small change, but it reflects on the mindset of society today where everything needs to be instant, disposable and hassle-free, even at the expense of Mother Nature.

But the competition isn't the only thing that UM Cares and E=MC2 have been up to. They recently organised a car boot sale at one of the university's carparks to sell second-hand goods, reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfill and indirectly, the manufacturing needed to buy new products.

"That event went quite well. I think most of the sellers were from outside the university. Only a small group were our own students," she said.

That just proves one thing: leading a sustainable lifestyle and avoiding wastage won't just save the environment, it also helps save money. But thanks to UM Cares, nine lucky winners for the "When I was young ..." competition's three categories (essays, videos and photos) won't just save money, they'll earn some as well.
