Spay your dogs if you do not want to keep their puppies, urged the Seberang Prai Municipal Council.
Its president Farizan Darus said there had been an increase in the number of stray dogs in Seberang Prai and owners were advised to spay their pets.
“Dog owners throw away newly born pups at public areas, including rubbish dumps and food courts, and this has become a nuisance.
“The stray dogs rummage for food at rubbish dumps and housing areas. They are also a safety concern to people who encounter them roving in packs.
“Dog owners should spay their dogs if they do not want to have more dogs. Spaying will help control the population of stray dogs in Seberang Prai,” he said during the council meeting yesterday at Bandar Perda in Bukit Mertajam.
He added that since the council launched its spaying programme this year, 53 dogs had been spayed.
Under the spaying programme, pet owners can spay their pets at a subsidised cost of RM120. The actual cost of spaying is around RM200 to RM300.
The council has also resorted to putting the dogs to sleep to help control the population. From January until June, 1,879 stray dogs have been put to sleep.
