I AGREE with Regina Kaur’s letter “Why pick on dogs only?” (The Star, Jan 16) as it appears local authorities are now passing their own responsibility and this could cause rifts between residents.
Imagine a prospective dog owner being told that his application was rejected because his neighbours did not give their consent. Similarly, if your neighbour does not take care of his dogs, you cannot say anything because you have consented to him being allowed to own dogs.
I have neighbours who walk their dogs daily and let the animals ease themselves at every opportunity. Dogs do this more to mark their territory, without a care whether it is someone’s porch, car tyres or flower pot.
I do not blame the dogs but the owners. I have always wondered how they would feel if someone just drop some dog poop on their compound.
So instead of asking residents to be part of the approving process, maybe the local council should instead send all prospective owners for training on how they should take care of their animals and to be more sensitive to other people’s feeling when they walk their dogs.
Kuala Lumpur.
