View: Dogs aren’t dumb

I read with interest the article titled World’s smartest dogs (by Kee Hua Chee, Weekender, Oct 4). A dog is not measured by its IQ but rather by a whole array of other traits they possess.

If I were to pick up a dog from the street which does not fall under the category of World’s Smartest Dogs, does that make my dog dumb? People adopt dogs for various reasons and every dog has its own way of showing affection.

Dogs are also trained to help the needy and they do such a good job at that. Those dogs do not fall into the smartest dog category.

In fact, most dogs have more going for them compared to an average human being. It is really irresponsible on the part of the writer and Weekender to write about dumb dogs.

As a publisher of a pet magazine I have seen my share of dogs. If the writer wants to help our canine friends, it would pay to visit the local SPCA or PAWS to highlight their plight rather than waste time and effort in wanting to highlight “dumb dogs”.

The average dog is a nicer person than the average person.
