Article: Cyclone victims receive 600 buffaloes

August 08, 2008 Categories: Asean+

YANGON: Small-scale rice farmers and farming households in Myanmar's cyclone-affected delta received assistance in time for the planting season with the distribution of 600 buffaloes in late-July, Relief Web reported, quoting The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).

The buffaloes will serve as an important asset for upcoming cultivations, FAO said yesterday.

It was reported recently that 300 households in Ayeyarwady and Yangon Divisions each received one pair of buffaloes as part of an FAO project funded by the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

All the animals had received veterinary care, including vaccination against major diseases, and were delivered to beneficiaries by the Myanmar Livestock Federation and the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department.

"Continuing efforts to maximise crop yields for the monsoon planting season is critical to improving food security," said FAO representative in Myanmar, Shin Imai, in a statement published on the website.

The impact of the 600 animals distributed will strike a chord beyond the padi fields of each beneficiary household.

Beneficiaries agreed to share their animals with neighbouring farmers, providing a complement to the social cohesion that is customary to the area, especially in times of catastrophe.
