IN shortly over a month, a YouTube grainy film footage, more than 30 years old, of Christian the lion emerging from the wild and being movingly reunited with his former owners has become the Top Rated (All Time) Global posting in Cyberspace. It has been seen by over 9.8 million (many teary) people since it was re-mastered and posted in high quality by TadManly on June 28 – who cleverly added Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ soundtrack.
In a nutshell, Christian the lion (cub then), was bought by housemates John Rendall and Anthony Bourke in 1969 from Harrod’s and raised for 18 months in their home until he grew too big. He was moved to the Kenyan wildlife sanctuary in Africa, featured in the film ‘Born Free’. A year later when his former owners visited the place, they were warned that Christian was now in the wild, had his own pride and would tear them to pieces.
Instead, as the film shows, Christian, some say they see a look of recognition in his eyes, rushed towards them, put his paws on Rendall’s shoulders, nuzzled his neck and licked his face. This incredible show of friendship has reduced millions to tears.
Rendall, who still lives in England, is a wildlife conservationist and ‘Ace’ Bourke is a lecturer and expert in the area of Aboriginal Art in Sydney. Both were interviewed over numerous TV stations last week. Listen to them speak of their relationship with Christian (at Lolo’s Couch).
Although the film footage had been put up on numerous other occasions over the past two years and with commendable numbers of hits, none have reached the status it has now.
Bourke (referred to as Ace “Berg” in a Daily Mail article) lives in Australia as a lecturer and expert in the area of Aboriginal Art, and John Rendall lives in the UK and is a Trustee of the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust.
TadManly at the end of last month added another tape of Christian playing football in the church gardens with his owners – this time to the tune of Nickelback’s ‘ If Everyone Cared’. Bet you it’s a hit too.
