Why is the outrage over wanton killings of our precious wildlife – in the mass media and Internet – so short-lived that nothing is done till the next one comes around, and the next … and next?
This is the question asked by numerous conservationists frustrated with the impunity poachers and hunters who slaughter these animals seem to enjoy.
On the other hand, members of the public who have for many years brought up the matter of despicable cruelty to both our wildlife and domestic animals are unable to understand why, despite announced concerted efforts of the authorities, their measures remain impotent in combating the issue.
It appears too that those involved in these illegal activities seem to have a “passport” to so. And passport may seem a relevant term because more foreign poachers are reportedly having a “field” day, crossing borders to Malaysian forest reserves, camping there and killing animals when they choose to.
Government agencies tasked with the job of "protecting" these animals say they are doing their best despite limited staffing, besides budgetary and bureaucratic constraints. Allocations and administration in this area are, in fact, low priority.
Meanwhile, as the conundrum of who-is-to-do-what, why, when, where and how continues, animals are dying at the merciless hands of emboldened poachers, many of whom are from neighbouring countries, and growing in numbers by the day.
Apparently, poachers from Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand don’t mind risking imprisonment as they get decent meals!
