The Selangor State government’s recent statement that steps have been taken to stop animal abuse by local councils is highly applauded and appreciated.
It is necessary for the authorities to act as there has been a lot of abuse of animals taking place around the nation, especially against dogs.
Although a lot of preventive steps have been implemented to stop such abuse, they are not effective as there are no proper guidelines. Many get off the hook due to loopholes in the laws, especially the existing Veterinary Act that governs animal welfare.
The idea of forming a committee to oversee this problem is welcome, but it must comprise the authorities, NGOs and individuals who are genuinely committed to the wellbeing of animals.
Systems that are currently in use need to be reviewed and amended if they are no longer relevant, and those who abuse the system must be punished.
A police report will be made against the Klang Municipal Council that is still using wire to snare strays, which causes cuts in the throats and bodies of the captured animals.
Let’s get together for the well being of the animals.
