Thousands visited Zoo Negara last Saturday to celebrate its 45th anniversary.
The national zoo is managed by the Malaysian Zoological Society, a non-governmental organisation established to create the first local zoo for Malaysians.
"Zoo Negara Malaysia has championed 45 years of education and conservation of wildlife and research in the fields of zoology, biology, veterinary and training," said director of Zoo Negara Dr Mohamad Ngah.
In recognition of the significant milestone, ING Insurance Berhad sponsored free entrance to the zoo for 4,500 children below the age of 12.
The company also hosted ING Day at the zoo, where both children and adults participated in activities designed to inculcate a sense of responsibility towards the environment. The children enjoyed activities such as the Go Green Relay Race, face painting, and a treasure hunt around the zoo.
Adults, on the other hand, were involved in activities such as Ice-cream Making, Paper Making, Craft Making and Sidewalk Chalk Art.
"The aim of hosting ING Day is to educate children and adults about the importance of nature, the issues concerning the environment and how we can take responsibility in protecting it," said president and CEOof ING Insurance Berhad Datuk Dr Nirmala Menon.
"Zoo Negara’s anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to remind Malaysians of our beloved national institution and what it stands for – conservation, education and recreation."
