It's now gone to the dogs. Criminals are resorting to stealing just about anything to make a quick buck. Even a puppy.A Norwegian couple living in Taman TAR, Ampang, lost their fivemonth- old Shih Tzu to a thief who pulled it through a four-inch opening in the front gate on Friday.
The puppy, Chip, was one of two Shih Tzu the couple owned. The other is Buzz.
The dognapper’s act was caught on the couple's security camera (CCTV). Relating the incident to Malay Mail, Linda Slaatta, 47, said the puppies would usually greet her when she got home from work. This time, it was just Buzz when she returned at 2.30pm.
“I opened the door and there was Buzz. I went to look for Chip but could not find him. I asked my maid but she didn’t know where he was. She went to look for him but could not locate him,” said Slaatta.
At the time, only Slaatta’s Indonesian maid and a contractor, who had come to fix the house, were in. They were upstairs when the incident occurred.
Slaatta’s husband, 55 - year - old Oyvind Bjorkhaug, and their youngest daughter were not home.
Slaatta then checked the CCTV footage recorded on her desktop.
She saw the two puppies on the porch, playing with each other. Then she saw a yellow and black cab stopping and a woman getting out and walking to the front gate.
“She reached for Chip through the pet exit and pulled him by force through that small opening,” said Slaatta.
She also tried to take Buzz.
“After she grabbed Chip, she went off in the cab. Minutes later, she came back and tried to get her hands on Buzz but he was afraid and did not go near the gate,” said Slaatta.
She then cal led the Ampang Jaya police station and claimed that they were less than enthusiastic.
“The patrol unit arrived 30 minutes later and the officers were here for about one hour. They said that I could lodge a police report but there was nothing much that they could do.
They even asked me for the cab’s registration number,” said Slaatta.
From the CCTV footage, Bjorkhaug thinks the suspect had planned it well as she seemed to know what to do.
“They got my puppy this time. What about the next time? Two-and-a-half years ago, a man walked into our home and stole our money and cell phone. We got him on CCTV too. We lodged a police report and even passed the recording to the police. But nothing after that. The thief came again a week later but luckily our contractor was here. He left,” said Bjorkhaug, who said that all he wants is his puppy back.
