In the current economy, everything has gone to the dogs, and this is literally true in Sydney, Australia where a high end pet retreat had its opening night last week.
Paw Paws, located in a converted warehouse, offers doggie daycare and long-term accommodation for dogs. It’s easy to think the recession is one big myth when you consider this new business that targets the pet-loving rich. Here, dogs spend a day getting pampered, fussed over and even perhaps enjoy a session at the spa while waiting for their owners to pick them up.
Owner of Paw Paws, Mandy Richards, 34, has turned a business into a passion, inspired by her Siberian Husky, Kishka.
“People often comment that Kish is spoilt and I reply, “why on earth would you have a dog if you weren’t going to spoil them”? They ask for so little yet give so much. At Paw Paws you have our promise that we will do everything we can to show our special guests just how much they are loved and appreciated,” says Richards on her website. Forget dog kennels — here, the guests get top dog lodgings. After checking in, the dogs are grouped by size into eight nurseries, each themed with custom designed furniture and entertainment (yes, they’re allowed on couches).
There’s the cute Cupcake Nursery for toy breeds to the Dog House for extra large dogs like Great Danes. Still, not every dog gets to this shaggy Shangri- La. Each guest must show proof of up to date vaccinations, with no sign of fleas. Fighting breeds, like pit bulls, will have to frolic elsewhere.
There’s also a one-hour jaunt on the rooftop playground, with nannies stationed to make sure any roughhousing among the guests won’t descend into a raucous dog fight. With such decadent living, how do you ensure that group play doesn’t result in puppies down the line?
Well, simple — all dogs must be spayed or neutered.
Schedule a bath for your furry friend, but here in Paw Paws it’s more than just a shower with the hose. Spa rituals include the Bow Wow Wow experience.
Your dog will be soothed by a massage with an infusion of Olive Oil and Rosemary before a Dead Sea Mud Masque is slathered over its coat. Then, it’s time for a soak in a Himalayan Mineral Water bath to revive sore and tired muscles. The price for this two-hour ritual? A$225 (RM516).
Planning a celebration for your furry bundle of joy? Well then, plan a pet party.
“From a pool party on the rooftop, “Sky Park”, to a toga party in the Roman Spa. The Paw Paws Puppy Parties are designed to be tail spinning fun for both you and your Furbaby and all the special party guests,” promises the Paw Paws website, offering three packages starting from A$250 (RM573) for a one hour Hound Dog party for 10 dogs and their tag-along owners.
Remember to leave with something special for your dog.
Pop by the boutique, where you can pick up crystal-encrusted collars and plush, dappled cushions so your furry companion can live a life of luxury.
