Wild elephants rampage in Aceh
JAKARTA: A herd of wild elephants went on a rampage in Indonesia’s north-westernmost province of Aceh, killing one person and destroying property, State-run media reported yesterday.
A herd estimated at 13 pachyderms entered Cot Pengee village in Aceh Jaya district during the past several days, forcing residents to flee their homes for safety.
Antara news agency quoted local community leader Iskandar Musa saying residents tried to drive the wild animals away with traditional methods, such as making loud sounds, but to no avail.
As lives were at stake, Aceh Jaya’s deputy district chief Zamzami A Rani said, some farmers had threatened to poison the elephants unless the Natural Resources Conservation Agency solved the problem immediately. — dpa
Stay on, peacekeepers told
MANILA: The Philippines has asked Malaysia, Brunei, Libya and Japan to extend the stay of their peacekeeping forces in the strife-torn southern region of Mindanao, an official said yesterday.
Hermogenes Esperon, presidential adviser on the peace process, said the presence of the 30-member international monitoring team (IMT) in Mindanao has helped implement a five-year ceasefire with the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Esperon said the team’s continued presence would ensure hostilities between the military and rebels do not escalate.
"We all know that the ceasefire arrangements with the IMT have worked wonders in the fragile if not difficult road to peace," he said in seeking to extend the international presence in Mindanao. — dpa
