Article: Animal love

GIVE THEM A HOME: Yap at the veterinary clinic in Taman Desa, with some of the puppies rescued from City Hall’s dog pound yesterdayIt would take a heart of stone not to feel sorry at the sight of 20 furry little puppies, all huddled together at the far end of their cages in fear with their tails tucked between their legs and desperately in need of a home.

Luckily, all were removed by caring animal rescuers from the City Hall-run animal pound at Setapak yesterday before they were due to be euthanised that evening.

The puppies, with ages ranging from two to seven weeks, were discovered when the rescuers were holding a protest at the pound on Feb 7, following allegations of animal cruelty at the hands of City Hall’s staff there.

Animal rescuer Raymond Yap, 36, said the puppies were taken out of the pound at 11am before being sent for medical checkup in Taman Desa.

When contacted at the veterinary clinic, Yap told Malay Mail they had also rescued two bitches — one with a newborn puppy and another with four newborns.

“By the end of the week, we hope to bring out some 70 puppies. Sadly, with each batch of dogs removed from the pound, there would be 10 more to take their place,” Yap said.

“This hasn’t got anything to do with our laws but with people’s mentality. They think of dogs as being of little consequence.

“Irresponsible pet owners feel it’s no longer their responsibility once they abandon their pets.”

Yap, who has been actively involved in dog rescues for the past two years, is looking for people to adopt the animals as finding those willing to foster them for a short period was not an issue.

“There was one man who offered his vacant home in SS2 to house the puppies and we may take up that offer as we can monitor all the puppies at the same time. Feeding them would also be easier as they would all be at one spot,” said Yap, who freelances in marketing and branding.

He said, even so, not just anyone can expect to adopt a puppy as the potential owner must past the animal rescuer’s own assessment.

“We would have to visit the potential owner’s premises first to ensure it is suitable.”

Those interested in adopting may email Yap at raymondyapkk@gmail.com or raymond@ixtive.com with their personal details, address and the number of puppies intended for adoption.
