The cruelty to animals that allegedly occurred at the City Hall Dog Pound merits a full examination of the shelter’s practices, as well as cruelty to animals charges against anyone found to be in violation of animal protection laws ("Animal torture chamber," 5/2/09).
The terror and suffering cats and dogs at the shelter endured in their last moments is unimaginable, if they were drowned and strangled to death, as a witness alleges.
Homeless animals have already suffered so much: abandonment by the people they love, abuse, painful injuries and illnesses, or a struggle to survive on the streets. When the best we can offer them is death, we have a responsibility to ensure that it is painless, quick, and dignified: delivered by intravenous injection of sodium pentobarbital. Anything else is unacceptable.
Cruelty should never occur in animal shelters – which are supposed to be safe havens for animals. Each of us can help prevent animals from ending up homeless, abused, or euthanised for lack of homes by having our animals spayed or neutered.
