Article: Man and his best friend at work

By G. PRAKASH September 26, 2008 Categories: News

Don’t mess with him: Tiger (right) barking fiercelyFirst they were known as man’s best friend. Now they are also working partners for some of us.

Man and dog can make a perfect partnership, protecting your properties and each other. This was proved when Malay Mail interviewed a guard-dog handler at a construction site at Jalan Sultan Ismail where he and his partner were at work.

It was amazing to see the chemistry between Selvam Krishnan and his guard dog, a two-year-old German Shepherd named Tiger.

Selvam, 25, who is a certified dog handler from the National Association of Security Dog Users, London, said: "Guard dogs are increasingly in demand due to the rising crime rate and greater concern for the safety of lives and property."

Tiger was trained by a company that trains dogs to be guard dogs. The company, named Pro One Guard Dog, is based in Kajang.

"Many upper-class households, exclusive clubs, large companies, law enforcement agencies, estates, jewellery shops, warehouses and commercial complexes are securing the services of guard dogs," said Selvam.

"Working with Tiger gives me some sort of self confidence as I know it will protect me when danger strikes."

Selvam’s job requires him to walk around with Tiger at the huge construction site. His work starts at 10pm and ends at 6am.

"It is sometimes creepy to walk around these construction sites late at night. I have heard some creepy sounds here, and having Tiger by my side is definitely comforting," Selvam said with a laugh.
